è key alt+0232
é key alt+0233

Actually, choose run from the start menu, type charmap and choose your font. In the bottom right hand corner, it tells you the keystrokes required when you click on one of the special characters.

I always end up cutting and pasting from Word (and of course once it's in the email once, you can copy and paste as many times as you need).

If your email system ties up with Word (or if you are using Word another time...)

Insert
Symbol
Fiddle about until you get the e + accent on screen (try making the Font (normal))and click on it, then click Insert at the bottom of the box.

If you could be bothered you could do it in Word and then try copying and pasting across to your email?

Keep a copy of Character Map open and copy and paste. You can find Character Map in:

Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Character Map

The ALT will work only if you use the numberpad, that's the set of numbers on the right of the keyboard, mostly completely ignored by all but accountant types in my experience.

You also need to press the button at the top of the number pad that says 'Number Lock'. After that it is easy and you can just leave it on all the time.

\link{http://www.tedmontgomery.com/tutorial/ALTchrc.html\This} is a great page showing all the special characters you can using the ALT key.

It's quite easy once you get used to it. If you're using a laptop, though, you don't have a separate number pad and although you can still do it that way it's a lot more of a pain. Hope this helps!

I found out the other day I could do an acute accent using Alt Gr + E

But I couldn't work out a way of doing the grave
