I know that one of you will be able to help with this situation

My friend’s daughter has left her boyfriend, who is the father of her son, and gone to live with my friend with her son. She is a full time student receiving a bursary of £5,000 per year, which pays her nursery fees. Her ex is self-employed. As she has now left him and is not in a relationship with anyone who is working her WFTC has been stopped. She cannot claim income support as she has nothing that is classed as income. She will be trying to get some maintenace off him, but as he a mortgae and a good accountant, she doesn’t hold out much hope of getting a reasonable amount.
What can she claim and who should she be speaking to?

She should be able to claim income support - she doesn't need to have an income. She should speak to someone at the benefits agency, or even citizens advice. I'm sure someone else will have better advice.
