Does anybody know the answer to this very crucial question of mine?

If you are housed by your council because you are skint and homeless how much rent might you expect to pay in comparison to a private rent?

Obviously this is question that has an answer specific to individual circs so just in case anyone has experience of the exact same here are the precise details:

Family of 5 (2 adults 3 children: g6, b4, b3) outer London/Kent willing to be housed in a 2 bed place to save money as probably can't afford 3 beds even if council foots large chunk of bill.

Thanks, I hope someone can help a teeny bit :)

Council/Housing ass rents are much cheaper. I pay £71.50 for a two bed flat and private would be at least £150 if not £175.
Don't know if this helps at all Smile

Yes it does boudicca, thank you.
Are you anywhere near London and is that per week?

I live just outside London (BR3) and yes those are per week.

We're 'neighbours' then Grin

kent 2 bed house with garden 89.90 would be £180-200 private

nannyme · 11/06/2006 17:36

And can one then claim HB in addition?

OP posts:

2 Bedroom flat £76 pw. Private rent around £150 pw.
You can only get HB if your income is less than £ 2 p.a Grin
Seriously if you are working the chances of HB are very low

There is a benefits calculator on most council websites.
Have at look at yours.
My friend was a single parent on benefits. She went back to work 16 hours and has £54 in her hand after paying £30 rent and £21 council tax ..HB pays the rest of the rent..weeny bit CT.
She wants to work more hours, she put in the details of her working over 30 hours at miminum wage, which is what she on and although she would be working nearly twice as many hours she would be £11 a week worse off????
