Internet Banks - any feedback

Our interest rate on our current account with high street bank is really low and the interest rates on the internet only banks seems to be so much better but we are hesitant to try. Any positive/negative feedback would be welcomed.

We have Alliance & Leicester Premier Current Account - internet/phone/branch - interest is 2+%, not sure at the moment. Cheap overdrafts. Pretty good service really. You can pay cheques in by post, cash in at any Post Office (it took over Girobank or something).

If you have any savings ING direct has one of the best rates - 4+%.

First Direct is fab, but I don't know if it offers good interest on current account (not that I ever have money in it to earn interest!) I also have an offset mortgage with them, so this actually 'earns' interest.

GeorginaA · 09/02/2004 18:00

First Direct is excellent - customer service is fabulous and really can't recommend them enough. You do get some interest on the current account but not sure how much - probably not a lot! Dh uses Cahoot as a personal spendings account and gets on well with them.

I am not sure what the ROI I get is TBH, but I find the internet service etc really good. I am with the Halifax, but there are bound to be better deals out there. What I like is that the ROI for the money that gets paid in outweighs the interest I get charged for my overdraft

spacemonkey · 09/02/2004 18:12

i use smile - can't remember what the current ac interest rate is, but i've found them very good - no complaints at all!

Second vote for First Direct
Excellent customer service

crystaltips · 09/02/2004 19:01

I use ING and they are fine - absolutely no problems !!

Epigirl · 09/02/2004 20:36

I think First Direct are excellent, they're always really helpful and their website is easy to use. Like egg and Smile for savings too.

I'm with Cahoot and they can be a bit....erm careless (I got sent someone elses letter once, and have had to chase things up in the past) but have had no major problems. I am quite happy with them generally

marthamoo · 09/02/2004 20:51

We've been with smile (The Co-operative Bank) for..oh..years now. Excellent. No complaints. Doddle to access your accounts and manage your money (when you've got some )

Ailsa · 10/02/2004 00:49

Another vote for First Direct. They did make one major mistake with dh's account, but as soon as he found it they put it right, without any charges and sent him a rather expensive bottle of whisky by way of an apology.

survivour · 10/02/2004 01:01

Abbey national do an internet bank account, and for every £1000.00, that you put in every month they give you £2.50p. So £2000.00 would have interest of £5.00p. I think this is pretty good, and you do not have to keep all of the money in the account.

allatsea · 10/02/2004 08:36

We have a First Direct current account which is excellent. Any excess funds at the end of the month are transferred to a higher interest account

Blackduck · 10/02/2004 09:00

Another vote for Smile - fabby doosey....in my view, great customer service, no gripes at all...

Azure · 10/02/2004 10:19

Yet another vote for First Direct - I have used them for over 10 years and recently took out an offset mortgage. DH changed his bank account to First Direct for the offset and can't believe how much better it is than his old bank (big high-street chain).
