Seeing as grown men ride BMXs, is it fair to assume a BMX I buy for my small 10yr old will last her a few years growth? Seems like the ideal investment or have I got this totally wrong? Are there separate ones for kids and adults? If so, how can you tell them apart?

TIA

You're sort of right.
Most BMXs are very heavy. Teens/Adults can manage but kids will find them a chore and difficult for stunts because of the relative high weight of bike to child's weight.

With BMX it's the top tube (from handle bars to seat) that makes for frame size. Longer = suitable for bigger person. The shorter the better for maneuverability.

I assume you want the BMX for larking around, right? A small MTB might be better for all round purposes (even if it too is quite heavy). Our stunt-BMX we bought out of the free-ads in the paper, btw, £25, so not too much to spend if it went wrong (has indeed been little used).
