Just been speaking to MIL on phone and what she told me makes my blood boil. She keeps an eye on an old lady nearby who is 90ish, a widow and has no family. She's a little frail in body but not in mind, but was robbed yesterday by some conmen. They came to say they were fixing the party fence between her and the neighbours garden and used the neighbours name so she thought it was genuine.
While she took them out to the kitchen door to get into the garden, another bloke stole some stuff. Nothing of huge value but that is not the point.
Complete bastards. She is very shaken by it all.
Makes me sick.

Something very similar happened to my MIL about two weeks ago - don't remember the exact excuse but they got her into the kitchen and out into the back garden and then stole her handbag. Luckily there was very little in it cashwise, but she lost her address book which upset her. This was in West London. Probably a good idea to warn people about it as it seems like the con of the moment. I'll never forget what happened to an old lady from when I used to work with old people - a youngish girl asked if she could come in because she was pregnant and had started bleeding and needed to use a bathroom. Of course she stole what she could when the old lady had her back turned. Until that point I never thought women were capable of such things..... naive I know.
