Ds came home last night stating that, as part of his homework for this week, he has to make a pheasant - yes a bl(dy pheasant. No suggestions on how to make it - just make it.
Helpppppppp!!!!!!
I have been looking on the net today for pictures and nipped out at lunch time for some relevant coloured card, tissue paper, pipe cleaners etc. but I need some ideas on how he can actually do this. Best idea so far from the office ladies is make the body with papier mache over a balloon - sounds ok but then what.....
Any suggestions and simple ideas greatly appreciated - ds is 10 by the way but has very limited interest in anything crafty.

Coddy - I love the dead pheasants!! Plus agree with your question - WHY?? They always have to do somewhing related to a book they are studying -currently going through some Roald Dahl ones so getting a few odd requests but none as odd as this one.

The modelling clay sounds good.

This is the funniest thing I have seen for ages, sorry to be no practical help whatsoever!

Janstar · 03/02/2004 16:35

Do they need it for a school play or something?

spacemonkey · 03/02/2004 16:36

dd suggested using an old pair of gloves stuffed with something for the wings (if you're going down the papier mache road that is)

Jaybee · 03/02/2004 16:36

Well at least the school has managed to cheer up alot of Mumsnetters. Plus I managed to find the dummies that katierocket was searching for while out at lunchtime.

Janstar - not as far as I am aware - no doubt we will just get it home again at the end of term.

Ahhh - he's reading 'Danny the Champion of the World' isn't he. Fantastic book.

Jaybee · 03/02/2004 16:49

Thomcat - he certainly is - he has read it before but they are starting to 'study' the book as well as just read it so has to do various things connected to it.

adapt a sock to make a pheasant glove puppet?

Thomcat · 03/02/2004 16:53

it's SUCH a lovely book - ahhh bless - just a shame that through such a great book you ended up having to make a pheasant!!!

I think if it was me I might use a rugby ball cover it in glue roll it in a load of feathers from the butchers for the main body and then busk it from there???

Ha ha - just had a thought, maybe you could go really twisted and use twigs for the legs and while you were at the butchers ask if he had a couple of old chickens feet you could have!!!!!

Sorry!!

Jaybee · 03/02/2004 17:00

I suppose that he will never forget that book - nor will I for that matter

just noticed the cornflake packet in the kitchen - it has quite a large picture of the kelloggs bird on the front - you could cut that out for the head

Tortington · 03/02/2004 17:15

or maybe you could adapt a rubber chicken - either buy one from ajoke shop or ask if any mumsnetters have one they wouldn't mind sending you ( i haven't sorry)

Jaybee · 03/02/2004 17:16

Funny you say that custardo - I was looking at one of those at lunchtime. Well I am heading off home now - will update on progress in the morning.

Tortington · 03/02/2004 17:19

what about a one dimensional pheasant? your son could draw it and paint it onto card you can cut out crepe paper for the feathers - more befitting a 10 year olds capabilities i think!!

or using the same principle you could make a mask - using card for the beak

Thomcat · 03/02/2004 17:20

Don't you think that my idea of a rugby ball and old pheasant feathers collected from the butchers is good ? !

I like coddy's dead flat pheasant idea.

TC, I love Danny too - lovely book! (And your rugby ball idea! )

FWIW - all you mums of pre-schoolers - my kids have hardly ever had to do anything like this (never had to make a pheasant!!!) dd1 did Victorian, about 12 years ago, and we've had a few odd-but-manageable requests for things like baby shoes, wartime bits and pieces and old toys, but that's about it. So don't panic!

GenT · 03/02/2004 18:26

When do they start making things like these for home-work or just get home-work that the parents end up doing usually because the kid hasn't the slightest idea?

When you tell me, I can countdown to it. My friend is an art teacher and would always find herself having to do over the assignment because the dad didn't do such a great job with the kid. Would be an embrassment if the child took it to school with the teachers knowing his mum is an art teacher.

I am no help in this project, perhaps another. Sorry

sunchowder · 03/02/2004 18:31

Coddy, as usual brill link.
Thomcat, great idea with Rugby Ball
Janstar - best ideas as always, you crafty thing you.

But, I must say that FIMO clay would be the BEST solution. Shape it, Bake it and Paint it!!! Spacemonkey suggested, and...you could always serve it with potatoes au gratin anyway.

roisin · 03/02/2004 18:37

Sorry - this just made me laugh!

A friend of mine teaches year 3, and every year over one half term they have a homework which involves making a model of a building from the town ... the results are spectacular, and clearly involve a lot of pupil and parent time and effort ... She currently has a son in year 2, and is contemplating changing that homework project next year

But a pheasant ...?!

fisil · 03/02/2004 18:46

This has brightened my day! Don't you think we should start a thread of the most ridiculous homeworks ever. I had no idea that I had all this to come (and I'm a teacher myself).

PS no ideas about pheasant manufacture!

Coddy · 03/02/2004 18:51

LOll print his out and send it anonymously to the school!

SoupDragon · 03/02/2004 18:57

A pheasant!!! LOL! Send a bottle of Famous Grouse instead. It's almost a pheasant.
