Can somebody please explain to me, very slowly, how msn works?

Dd1 (Y6) is feeling left out because all her friends are on MSN. So: how do I set her up with msn, how does it work once we're there, and am I right in assuming it's not as risky as chatrooms etc?

Okay, it's a stupid question, but could someone humour me? Please? Smile

You have to register using an email address and user name. Then you add a list of 'buddies'.

When you and your buddies are on line at the same time you can hold 1 to 1 or group conversations.

Personally I don't think it is much safer than chatrooms - nutters can still lie and it is as hackable as any other software. Be very strict on parental rules and filters if you are letting a kid use it.

Ah, thanks for that. Presumably you can use it without all the fancy microphone/webcam thing? Do I need to set her up with a hotmail account first?

Doesn't have to be hotmail - I use my yahoo address.

No you don't need all the other stuff.

frogs · 22/05/2006 12:46

Thanks for that. Am off to set her up with an email address and then will try the msn thing. After all if squillions of preteens up and down the country can manage it, then a 30-something with 2 degrees should be able to, no? [hopeful grin]

Okay. I've got her an email address, but when I go to the page you linked to and click on 'get it free' the same page just reloads.

Isn't is possible to use without all these fancy downloads that won't work on macs anyway? I just don't get it, and can't see anywhere you can add buddies.

Heyelp!

Agh - didn't know you had a Mac.

I'm a Windows gal, so can't help you there I'm afraid.

SaintGeorge · 22/05/2006 13:24

\link{https://www.microsoft.com/mac/default.aspx?pid=msnmessenger\This} will be what you need.

Further than that you might need to shout for a Mac user to help.

MrsBadger · 22/05/2006 13:29

I'm a Mac and MSN user - let me know if you need any more help!

You are heroes -- I think we may have cracked it. And you have saved me from the Blush of being the only person in the developed world too stupid to work out msn. Grin
