For dh's birthday I've booked a suite in a lovely hotel and I've also booked the private screening room for 3 hours. So now the question is what film to show?

To give you an idea of films he (and I) like, I guess Sideways is one of the films we liked the most last year, and we both like The Truman Show, Pulp Fiction, Shrek 1&2, The Incredibles, (we've probably watched more childrens films than anything over the past 5 years!) Pirates of the Caribbean plus he likes Star Wars but I don't think I'd want to screen that. We both also like classics like Butch Cassidy etc and It's a wonderful life. So, suggestions please! And can I do 2 films in 3 hours do you reckon and if so, which two? My thoughts so far are possibly Pulp Fiction and one other shorter one but I'm not sure that's the right one tbh.

TIA for any suggestions. I think I want romantic but not impossibly girly so not Love Actually (which I hated) or Bridget Jones.

is it just you and him in the screening room?

WideWebWitch · 21/05/2006 10:25

Yes.

suzywong · 21/05/2006 10:27

well all right then, that broadens your options

hmmmmmm........Once Upon A Time In Mexico

yes it does have my boyfriend in it, but Taratnito was on board to co produce and have a small role, i think he wrote some of the screenplay with Robert Rodriguz. It's a bit like From Dusk Till Dawn without the zombies

WideWebWitch · 21/05/2006 10:29

I just looked it up, oh, by your boyf, you mean Johnny Depp, ha ha! And it's got Banderas but tihs is for HIM not me! Is it good?

Yes it's very very good, very funny and lots of action.
If you like Butch Cassidy, Pirates of the Caribbean and Pulp Fiction you will love it. Plus Salma Hayek's bosoms fight to get out of her tight costume.

Carmenere · 21/05/2006 10:57

Kill Bill 1&2???

Carmenere · 21/05/2006 10:57

although not very romantic admittedly

littlerach · 21/05/2006 11:26

Kalifornia?

Can't really remember much about it but friend who I watched it with liked tarantino esque films.

harmonicacarrier · 21/05/2006 11:28

Grosse Point Blank?

Prufrock · 21/05/2006 11:43

Betty Blue? Opening 10 minute sex scene should get you in the right sort of mood, and it's romantic, but dark as well (sort of doomed love story with mad woman), and fabulous soundtrack. You would have to put up with subtitles as well though.

Are you going to the one I suggested then? It got an amazing write up in the Evening standard the other week as an incredibly romatic hotel.

WideWebWitch · 21/05/2006 12:01

Now Betty Blue, I've tried to watch it about 3 times, all when I was in my twenties and never got past the first 20 minutes before switching off. No, not the one you mentioned, they were full by the time I booked but thanks anyway! It's a London one, will post a review when we're back!

We watche Grosse Point Blank recently so not that, I like it though. Hmm, KillBill not quite the mood I want I don't think. Thanks for these ideas though!

can you give us a bit more to go on, what mood are you trying to capture, do you want classic or blockbuster, thriller or romance, do you care about the cast or the auteur? Come on.

arfy · 21/05/2006 12:06

I was going to say Grosse Point Blank!
but then it is one of my very, very favourite films and the one that DH and I would have at a private screening.

now my mind is blank. when you post more info will try again

The Producers?

Walk The Line is out on Monday (I haven't seen it yet though).

cupcakes · 21/05/2006 12:09

The Life Aquatic was v good too
and men always like Bill Murray.

dublindee · 21/05/2006 12:12

Life is Beautiful.

WideWebWitch · 21/05/2006 12:12

Ok, I guess I want, not in any partic order:

cool. ish. As it's his 30th and I don't want him to feel old (ha bloody ha but ykwim)
maybe sexy, ish but not 9 and a half weeks
feel good enough but not pap (i.e. Love, Actually, bag of shite imo) but Amelie and Beautiful Thing v good imo
I liked Pulp Fiction and Reservoir Dogs, wasn't as keen on Kill Bill

Maybe Oceans 11, something with that level of cool and slightly sophisticated, so I pos could do a really excellent heist movie. I'm vaguely wondering about Boogie Nights or The Matrix or The original Italian Job, all fairly different but both good. But we've probably seen the Italian Job too recently to consider that.

I liked Une Liaison Pornographique but don't think it's quite the thing I'm after. I want to feel satisfied, chilled, happy at the end of it. Gawd, not asking much of a mere movie, am I? :)

dublindee · 21/05/2006 12:13

Ah just saw you wanted to feel chilled and happy - best not get Life is beautiful then.....

WideWebWitch · 21/05/2006 12:14

Just looked it up, agree dublindee!

dh recommends Face (the Damon Albarn film) and Ronin.
and Oceans 11 and 12.

WideWebWitch · 21/05/2006 12:15

I gues of Pirate of the Caribbean 2 was out then, that's the one I'd choose but it won't be, we're talking early July here, it'll either be in the cinema or about to be released, not sure of its date.

OP posts:
WideWebWitch · 21/05/2006 12:15

The Producers, hmm, someone tell me about that please.

zippitippitoes · 21/05/2006 12:20

City of God

Chinatown

suzywong · 21/05/2006 12:21

Sometimes for pillow talk, my boyfriend tells me about his movies and I seem to distantly recall that Pirates of the Caribbean 2; Dead Man's Chest is not out till July 7th \link{http://adisney.go.com/disneypictures/pirates/index.html\have a look at the trailer}

cupcakes · 21/05/2006 12:22

we watched it the other night (the new one). Comedy (lots of rude innuendo) which dh and I both found v funny. Lots of musical numbers but even dh liked these as they were rather tongue in cheek. Matthew Broderick, Nathan Lane and Uma Thurman.
Definitely feelgood. Might even buy it.
