OK, what film should I show at a private screening for dh's 30th Birthday? All suggestions welcome!

For dh's birthday I've booked a suite in a lovely hotel and I've also booked the private screening room for 3 hours. So now the question is what film to show?

To give you an idea of films he (and I) like, I guess Sideways is one of the films we liked the most last year, and we both like The Truman Show, Pulp Fiction, Shrek 1&2, The Incredibles, (we've probably watched more childrens films than anything over the past 5 years!) Pirates of the Caribbean plus he likes Star Wars but I don't think I'd want to screen that. We both also like classics like Butch Cassidy etc and It's a wonderful life. So, suggestions please! And can I do 2 films in 3 hours do you reckon and if so, which two? My thoughts so far are possibly Pulp Fiction and one other shorter one but I'm not sure that's the right one tbh.

TIA for any suggestions. I think I want romantic but not impossibly girly so not Love Actually (which I hated) or Bridget Jones.

Cinema Paradiso

beautiful film and one of our favourites.

zippitippitoes · 21/05/2006 12:27

LA Confidential

WideWebWitch · 21/05/2006 12:28

sw, I am very envious of your boyf. I reckon we could go and see that in the middle of the day on Saturday then and then still see something else in the screening room on Sunday.

Amelie, Some like it hot...

suzywong · 21/05/2006 12:52

Oh yes, Some Like It Hot is an enduring classic, that's a good choice

WWW, he's nice but tbh that beard is a bit prickly and he refuses to shave Wink

Bucketsofdinosaurs · 21/05/2006 20:02

Withnail & I
This is Spinal Tap
High Fidelity
The Big Lebowski

These are my DH's favourite films and he just turned 30, all very cool and 'manly' but also feelgood and hysterically funny to girls too.

Can't believe someone recommended City of God, talk about a party killer!

melsy · 21/05/2006 20:19

Last seduction is quite saucy , lots of raunch!!

Id 2nd Oceans 11 , didnt like 12 though, was all over the place.

Some like it hot , love love love that film ; "nobody talks like that" , "Im a girl, Im a girl" . Its about the only film I can qoute !!!

lahdeedah · 21/05/2006 20:25

if you want something classic, funny and romantic, I recommend The Apartment with Jack Lemmon and Shirley Maclaine - one of my all-time favourites.

Also - how about Secretary? it's quite rude, but also very romantic (in a weird twisted sort of a way)

Out of Sight is a good heist movie that's also very romantic (with the added bonus of the luscious George Clooney)

HTH Smile

lahdeedah · 21/05/2006 20:26

(just realised I used the word romantic 3 times in my last post - must get myself a thesaurus Grin)

harmonicacarrier · 21/05/2006 21:36

Out of Sight is a fantastic film actually

Tortington · 21/05/2006 21:39

rocky horow picture show - but he must wear suspenders?

SquarewaysHereWeCome · 21/05/2006 21:43

Was going to suggest High Fidelity but Bucketofdinosaurs got there first!

Have you ever seen The Count of Monte Cristo? Great film - from what you have said you like, it might just be up your street.

Marina · 21/05/2006 21:44

Secretary! It's a wonderful film www.
Last Seduction also good - or what about The Postman Always Rings Twice (the Lana Turner/John Garfield one)
Big Easy is my favourite romantic thriller with a happy ending

cod · 21/05/2006 21:45

a pricate screenign
hwo odd

Marina · 21/05/2006 21:45

ooh, ooh, Swingers. Fabulous. If you both don't laugh yourselves silly...

Marina · 21/05/2006 21:49

Old films shorter so you could squeeze a double-bill out of some of the vintage suggestions, plus, also, do you do foreign stuff with subtitles?
Romuald et Juliette is a lovely rom-com with a twist, L'Appartement is good, and La Nuit Americaine is one of Truffaut's loveliest films.
Vivement Dimanche, one of his last, is also lovely.

Woody Allen? Hannah and her Sisters/Manhattan double bill? Sleeper?

harmonicacarrier · 21/05/2006 21:51

The Dreamers
is very, ahem, appropriate for a private screening
White Palace

Marina · 21/05/2006 21:53

I think I might have a fight on my hands with HC for one Mr J Spader...

rabbitrabbit · 21/05/2006 21:54

Idenity with John Cusack is a great movie. As is Momento with Guy Pearce.

Neither are romantic-both thrillers-but they're also films that my husband loved.

If you can stand a-in parts-violent but v v good movie-American History X is a fantastic movie.

harmonicacarrier · 21/05/2006 21:58

ooh James Spader
he is soooooo filthy
Sex Lies and Videotape
I may have seen that once or twice

WideWebWitch · 21/05/2006 21:59

Oh I'd forgotten about The Last Seduction! That's a maybe. Marina, I can do subtitles if it's really worth it, Une Liaison Pornographique was great I thought. High Fidelity not romantic enough. Oceans 12 was terrible I thought but I liked Oceans 11, that's on the shortlist. He's seen Secretary, I was pregnant at the time and went to bed with knackeredness after 10 minutes so it's a no I think. Don't know Out of sight, will look it up. Postman always sounds good too, even Jessica Lange/Jack Nicholson version was ok wasn't it iirc?

Cod, what's yer point, ay, ay? He loves films and will be really thrilled with it, it's a big birthday and wot's it to you anyway? We have a suite in a great hotel and a cinema to ourselves, I reckon we'll have a great time.

I am in a BAD MOOD tonight...

So, the shortlist is

Pulp Fiction
Some Like it Hot
The Last Seduction
Ocean's 11
Withnail & I although we've seen it fairly recently
And I will look up a couple of these suggestions. Thanks everyone, some great ideas here.

OUT OF SIGHT definitely Out Of Sight
you will love I promise

WideWebWitch · 21/05/2006 22:01

I too have a thing about Spader! Sex lies etc was fab. Dh knows this! We went to see Memento at the cinema together during a dirty weekend in Dublin in the first 6 months we were togeher so it has history, will add it to my list. I also v much like J Cusack so will look up Identity. And Dreamers, never heard of it.
