For dh's birthday I've booked a suite in a lovely hotel and I've also booked the private screening room for 3 hours. So now the question is what film to show?

To give you an idea of films he (and I) like, I guess Sideways is one of the films we liked the most last year, and we both like The Truman Show, Pulp Fiction, Shrek 1&2, The Incredibles, (we've probably watched more childrens films than anything over the past 5 years!) Pirates of the Caribbean plus he likes Star Wars but I don't think I'd want to screen that. We both also like classics like Butch Cassidy etc and It's a wonderful life. So, suggestions please! And can I do 2 films in 3 hours do you reckon and if so, which two? My thoughts so far are possibly Pulp Fiction and one other shorter one but I'm not sure that's the right one tbh.

TIA for any suggestions. I think I want romantic but not impossibly girly so not Love Actually (which I hated) or Bridget Jones.

Identity looks like it has a good cast. Shame you've seen GPB recently - would be perfect...

Have to agree with Zippitippitoes,

City Of God (Cidade de Deus)Is a fantastic film.

Subtitled though!

Here's the blurb:

Cidade de Deus (City of God) is a housing project built in the 1960's thatin the early 80'sbecame one of the most dangerous places in Rio de Janeiro. The tale tells the stories of many characters whose lives sometimes intersect. However, all is seen through the eyes of a singular narrator: Busca-Pé, a poor black youth too frail and scared to become an outlaw but also to smart to be content with underpaid, menial jobs. He grows up in a very violent environment. The odds are all against him. But Busca-Pé soon discovers that he can see reality differently than others. His redemption is that he's been given an artist's point of view as a keen-eyed photographer. As Busca-Pé is not the real protagonist of the filmonly the narratorhe is not the one who makes the decisions that will determine the sequence of events. Nevertheless, not only his life is attached to what happens in the story, but it is also through Busca-Pé's perspective of life that one can understand the complicated layers and humanity of a world, apparently condemned to endless violence.

Out of Sight is good - that and The Postman Always Rings Twice might make for quite a saucy evening, iirc...

SquarewaysHereWeCome · 21/05/2006 22:08

If you look up The Count of Monte Cristo, don't believe it is just about revenge - there is a true love theme running all the way through it. It is very engaging, and if you find something better for your celebration, I thoroughly recommend watching it another time

Just looked up Identity, too scary, I will end up closing my eyes as am a wuss.

WideWebWitch · 21/05/2006 22:11

Oh, we HAVE seen Out Of Sight but a long time ago, yes, I remember it, ok, it's on the shortlist!

Donnie Darko? Fab film - we've just watched it tonight for the umpteenth time.
Agree with Out of Sight and Marina's suggestion of Romuald et Juliette (love this film!)

satine · 21/05/2006 22:46

The Thomas Crown Affair (the new one with Pierce Brosnan) is cool, classy and very sexy

And 'The beat that my heart skipped' is a fantastic recent french film that oozes gallic intensity and style - but it's not the world's most romantic!

But actually I'd probably go for a classic like Cinema Paradiso or Manon des Sources or Jean de Florette or even an old Hitchcock like Rear Window (my favourite!)

arfy · 21/05/2006 23:33

snafu, your name goes very well with Grosse Point Blank.....

well for a smart thriller type thingy I really liked The Bourne Supremacy

Out of Sight and Oceans 11 also fab. Identity not really scary at all (I'll watch anything with John Cusack in it though Grin).

What about Memento?

arfy · 21/05/2006 23:33

or L.A Confidential

Blu · 21/05/2006 23:59

Jamon Jamon
Secretary
The Motorcycle Diaries
Ma Vie En Rose
Buena Vista Social Club

(lovely idea, btw...and can you take drinks to match the movie?)

NotAnOtter · 22/05/2006 00:09

its a wonderful life

dublindee · 22/05/2006 11:46

If you want to wee yourself laughing The Actors is hilarious. (Michael Cain and Dylan Moran) I dare you not to laugh out loud at the "ears" bit!

Blu · 22/05/2006 11:49

What about a Steve Martin film? His 'Cyrano', or Dirty Rotten Scoundrels?

zippitippitoes · 22/05/2006 11:54

Dr Strangelove

Marina · 22/05/2006 11:58

If it's going to be Steve Martin blu, hasn't it got to be The Jerk or The Man with Two Brains?
"son, you is not our natural born child"
"Into the mud, scum queen!"...

southeastastra · 22/05/2006 12:16

Yes, yes The Man with Two Brains, 'I saw you in the lake, kissing your brain'.

YohoAhoy · 22/05/2006 13:39

I think this is a lovely idea! Are you allowed drinks/food?

A nice glass of wine/beer and a bucket of popcorn = perfection :)

You've some good choices there, but can I second The Apartment?

It's an absolute classic - funny, sad, romantic and just, well, wonderful.

Add it to your list

Littlefish · 22/05/2006 13:52

Chocolat

Romantic, quirky, lots of chocolate, feel good, chill out (plus Johnny Depp!)

WideWebWitch · 22/05/2006 19:59
