ds aged 4 is convinced England will win the World Cup

do you think I should start letting him down gently now?

we have just made a book together which comprised of pictures (he drew, well scribbled) while I wrote the score (that he wanted) and all the scores were 10-0 or 9-0 to England.

He's not a great loser at the best of times - we haven't had to see many losses this year because of who we support but I fear the poor boy is about to learn lesson number 1 in the emotional trauma that is Supporting England.

Ah bless him, sometimes you have to tell them that they aint always right (even though it makes life a bit easier if you agree with them!) I'm not looking forward to ds1 reaching that age! GL with breaking the news about england not winning the wc (i hope we at least get to the finals!) i love footy!

I think you probably should start to gently paint the picture that it may not happen. I can remember sitting watching the first ever Lottery draw with dh's cousin (then 3) and she was so convinced that they were going to win (unfortunately her mum had mad the mistake of saying if they did she would quit her job -long hours - and spend more time at home with her). Obviously they didn't win and the poor girl was totally inconsolable for days. .

oh comeoveneer, what a dreadful story - poor little girl!!

I will try and break it to him gently - he's looking forward to putting the scores on his chart so I'll try and get him to focus on that!

God get it over and done with and tell him they have no chance whatsoever!!!

Sorry I really don't think they have a chance in hell of winning the world cup and get really cross with these stupd songs proclaiming about lions and crying and not winning since 66!!

fis, try giving him the idea that a lot of luck is involved in football - good and bad - and that not winning sometimes means you just had some bad luck (then he can sympathise with them!)

Foxinsocks - my ds (nearly 5) is the same. Totally obsessed at the moment. Fortunatly, being Bradford City fans we are used to watching them lose (well most of this season it's been draws) so he's been getting used to the idea that you don't have to support the best teams.

As far as the World cup goes (the Final is on his birthday so the excited build up is going to be a nightmare & started weeks ago), we've told him that even though England are a good team, one of our best players is injured so we might not be lucky this time. He seems ok with that idea.

He understands losing (has seen our team lose) but I think it is all the hype that's around - everywhere you go there are flags, trophies, shirts etc. that he's getting caught up in it all.

I've told him that even if (when) England go out, there will be other games and players to watch so I hope that will keep him interested!

Excited is not the word for it. He's driving us mad at the moment!

We want to have a picnic in the park for his birthday & he's asking for the whole thing to be arranged so he can get back in time to watch - either that or "take the telly to the park". nice idea.

Hey thats nothing, ds1 is 4, abd is convinced Pompey are the best team in the world and will win everything. You can't fault his loyalty!
