India Knight & special needs

was ill this week and read IK's book 'how do you want me?' which is about 4/5 years old. i was shocked that she used the words 'spaz', 'spasticated' and 'retarded' to describe various characters.

since she wrote this book she has had a daughter who has some kind of syndrome that means she has/will have special needs - she wrote about it a bit in her ST column this week, and one of her daughter's main problems is with her palate and the way she communicates.

given her current circumstances, do you think she regrets using such crass and offensive language in her book now, or should she stand by her decision to write what she likes?

Wow, I'm inpressed. Great article, and I'm sure you're right, SueW, that must be Moomin's email she's referring to.

fattiemumma · 21/05/2006 10:57

ok ok i take it back...that article is very good and i like the idea

alexsmum · 21/05/2006 11:52

glad she acknowledged the error of her ways.
sounds like a good idea.

Well done Moomin! Well done India for listening and thinking!

Blandmum · 21/05/2006 12:27

I saw this today, and immediatly thought of MN Smile

I could also see many posters shuddering at the 'Holland' bit.

I'm now even more sure that she lurks on MN.

Her other article was about poor role models for young girls.

Yay! It's you Moomin!

You are the conscience of the nation's commentators!

merlotmama · 21/05/2006 12:57

I'm sure she does lurk on MN. I think I may have heard about it from her? I've always thought she speaks a lot of sense, except for 1) being V.anti-NCT and natural chilbirth and 2) the theraputic effects of housework.
I think a lot of what she writes is very heavily coloured by her own experiences and therefore open to amendment in the light of subsequent experience. Same with all of us. I love her attitude to childrearing - very no nonsense. I have often thought her wee daughter has landed lucky re. her Mum. If India brings the same degree of sense to raising her and helping her to fulfill her potential. Nearly emailed her to say so, but thought it might sound patronising.
PS India if you are reading this ,please come round to my house next time you're feeling low/teed off with life.
Also thought the Italy/Holland analogy excellent - the Dutch will just have to get over it!
