Does anyone play the flute or know anything about it?

Dd has just started learning and she is getting frustrated as she can't always get a sound out of it. I'm really impressed that she doesn't seem to have any problem picking up the finger positions and that she is learning to read music really easily.

How difficult is it to get a tune out of a flute, I assume that with more practice it will become natural to her, but at the moment she is feeling a bit fed up.

rickman... I'm also a flautist. I echo the practise with just the mouthpiece advice.

If you need to borrow a curved head joint I have one. My flute is a Yamaha. Let me know lovelymarslady at aol dot com.

Tell her to hang on in there. It comes. DD1 is also learning to play the flute. Smile

Hi, I am also a flautist, and have taught a few children in my time too.

Would definitely practice getting noises out of bottles, as this is the shape you need to make with your mouth to get a noise out of the flute. Practice blowing across the top of bottles till your DD finds a mouth position that is comfortable for her, and that works. Once mastered the bottles, move on to the flute head on its own.
Whilst the majority of people blow out of a small hole in the middle of their mouth whilst playing the flute, I know I blow from the side, so it is definitely a case of practice, practice, practice.

HTH and that she perseveres with it Smile

Learning the flute taught me how to get a note out of glassbottles :o Couldn't do it before the flute lessons (and I've not lost the knack numerous years on)
