As you are all prob aware I follow the Gf routine and am also on her website and this was posted for us to see.

Dear Members,

In response to your emails regarding the statement in The Times Newspaper on 9th May 2006. We would like to confirm that neither Gina or her lawyers have put pressure on Mumsnet regarding the criticism that her methods receive on their forums. Gina was forced to seek legal
advice regarding other very serious issues with Mumsnet, and we will in the near future make a public statement as to her reasons for this. It would appear that some Mumsnet members are demanding a ban of the
Gina Ford name on the site. Gina herself would welcome this, as her forthcoming statement will confirm, she has for very valid reasons, no wish to be associated with the Mumsnet site.

I am not comparing GF to Barbara Woodhouse, obviously, just agreeing that different styles [for children, pets, etc] go in and out of fashion...

Filyjonk · 12/05/2006 09:18

also a consequence of our big brains. we have about 4 x as much grey matter as our nearest relatives I think? And humans are unique in the amount of post birth brain growth, I think.

But lets face it, no animal keeps its young in a darkened room avoiding eye contact and refusing to feed it.

Jimjamskeepingoffvaxthreads · 12/05/2006 09:18

ah you got there first chapsmum

ruty · 12/05/2006 09:18

children, pets, amphibians...

expatinscotland · 12/05/2006 09:18

in physical anthro we learned that the human infant is born as immature as it is as a consequence of bipedal locomotion. is this theory still regarded as true?

Jimjamskeepingoffvaxthreads · 12/05/2006 09:19

as far as I know expat.

Filyjonk · 12/05/2006 09:20

interesting, I learnt about the big brains in 3rd year bio psychology. I challenge you to a duel of the disciplines!

expatinscotland · 12/05/2006 09:20

sorry, just read jimjams' posts. for our class we went to a museum and saw a female chimp pelvis v. a human one. WOW! the chimp one was LLLLOOONNGGG.

ruty · 12/05/2006 09:20

why don't you just say walking on two legs expat? Grin

Jimjamskeepingoffvaxthreads · 12/05/2006 09:20

I learned about it in Zoology :)

beety · 12/05/2006 09:20

ahh ok, but can you imagine having to wait another 3 months..jesus we woudl go insane Grin

chapsmum · 12/05/2006 09:21

ah yes there was the monkey study years and years ago, where they divided 2 baby monkeys, gave one a cloth mother and the other wire mother to feed from.
The baby with the cloth mother (similar in texture to its own) thrived
the monkey with the wire mother became aggressvie and dechatched....interesting

ruty · 12/05/2006 09:22

yes i remember that chapsmum.

Jimjamskeepingoffvaxthreads · 12/05/2006 09:23

oh yes I remember that one. Poor baby with the wire mother.

expatinscotland · 12/05/2006 09:23

aw, chaps, i remember reading about that study. found it cruel myself.

my wee baby buddha LOVES to be carried round in her sling all day.

Papillon · 12/05/2006 09:23

I have read Dr Harvey Karp... www.thehappiestbaby.com

an american baby expert, who is celebrity certified... but none-the-less quite good at encouraging you as a parent to find ways to soothe your babe.

GamelanCarrier · 12/05/2006 09:23

also the human pelvis is compromised in terms of shape - the human baby has to do a complicated twisty turny thing to get out

ruty · 12/05/2006 09:24

thought i thought one was kept with its real mother and one was given an artifical mother - may be a different study - but the outcome was similar.

ruty · 12/05/2006 09:24

or not GC - my ds got stuck. Grin

Filyjonk · 12/05/2006 09:25

Well if you're all going to say I'm wrong, there's nothing for it but for me to write a book, then sue you all.

GamelanCarrier · 12/05/2006 09:26

oh the wire mother Sad
Yehudi Gordon is quite good at providng "general routines" and middle ground for parents whio are not entirely comfortable with go with the flow, and want a bit of guidance
he has some ood pointers about gently weaning your baby off sleep associations without cc/sleep training

GamelanCarrier · 12/05/2006 09:28

yes, getting stuck is the problem Sad especially with changes to pelvic shape and lifestyles etc
even the most passionate proponents of natural birth accept that some women will need assistance and a C section

compo · 12/05/2006 09:28

Can someone please explain to me why Ann Clough objects to that thread when it doesn't even mention GF? It's just swearing? Why would a google of GF bring up that thread [confused emoticon]

Filyjonk · 12/05/2006 09:30

Oh god the wire mother.

Always remember at uni having to meet a friend doing a phd in animal psychology, and to get to his room had to walk through a corridor full of chimps in cages with electrodes sticking out of their heads. Vile. I mean, probably doing something worthwhile, maybe, but still looked pretty vile.

Unsuprisingly the lab was tucked away on the top floor....

pooka · 12/05/2006 09:33

I htought that what they did was have a cuddly mother with no milk and a wire mother with milk. The baby monkeys went for the cuddly one despite there being no nutritional gain. Very sad.
