.......how on earth do you get rid of the rank smell? Is it possible at all, or do we just have to stick it out and wait until the unfortunate rodent decomposes completely before the whiff disappears?

Anyone know?

The problem is that it's coming from dd's room and she has laminated flooring on top of the floorboards. Assume it originally entered the area via the airing cupboard, having possibly been brought in by one of the cats. With everything else that has gone wrong/broken recently, there is no way we can afford to take up the floor.

We had this about 4 weeks ago - think it was a mouse - absoulute rank smell - cabbage like. We even got gasman out. I basically sprayed detox by skirting board where it was and aired room. My ex-p does pest control and stuff for council and apparantly a dead mouse is a PIA to find if ever found and the smell goes after 4-7 days. hth x

Excellent Awen - that's what I needed to hear. We've pulled out everything in her room and the wee pest is nowhere to be seen, so we can only assume he's popped his clogs under the floor. Cat probably brought him in half dead (poor thing)! The window is wide open, so not so bad now, but was rough this morning when we opened her door! Hopefully in a few days it won't be noticable.

Thanks Smile

I had a couple of dead rats under the floorbaords in my old house. I took up boards a couple of times and found it, but once I couldn't see where it was at all. Yes, the smell does disappear, but if I were you I would put up some fly-killer strips.

Aero · 10/05/2006 13:47

Good idea blu - will pick some up. Got some fly-spray in the house too already. Thanks.

It is rank rosie, isn't it. Think we'll put dd in with ds1 for a few nights.

lol tutter - I'm trying hard to find the humour in the smelly situation. Grin

One of my cats bought in a mouse which unbeknown to us, crawled into a corner of DS's room and died.

The indescribable and revolting smell lasted about 2 weeks before we found the cause ... literally going through everything in DS's room with a fine tooth comb until we found the source. It'd crawled into the corner of a bag full of oold soft toys that DS had pushed under his bed. I'd been accusing him of leaving wet trainers/socks/pants to fester somewhere - or of spilling milk etc.

I would be a bit concerned about leaving it to decompose with the weather heating up .... could attract flies, and tehn maggots - yuk.

I once found a mouse in the inside of an umbrella when i was a kid and couldnt work out the smell till i looked up and saw the dead mouse with its claws wrapped around the stem. Still thnk of that now when i want a cat.
