How would you react if you were wrongly accused of nicking something?

Was at a carboot yesterday. Looking through some Mr Men books, decided on one, paid the man and put it in bag. Woman with him says "she had 2" to which he replied "no just the one". She then said, "no she had 2" to which I replied very sweetly "no just the one" and walked on.
Mil said she would have told her where to shove it and demanded the money back for the one bought. Dh agreed when I saw him later.

What would you have done?
Have to say on another day I may have reacted quite differently and if I was replying to this, I would probably say I'd have a row with the woman.

i don't know... but if I thought that someone had taken 2 books rather than one then i'd have said the same as the lady!
she could have just shouted "OI, THIEF... SHE'S NICKED MY BOOK!"

i think you did the right thing though!

Good point Starlover. I've sold at bootsales as well, don't know what T'd do if I thought someone had stolen something.
I'm glad I kept calm though. But it bothered me that someone thought I could pinch something off a stall.

I'd have unwrapped the bag and said "let's count. Erm - one."

What a wierdie. Why did she think you'd have 2? Was she just nuts or did your DD have lots of Mr MEn shaped pockets in her clothes?

I don't know why! I was the only person at the stall so she had a good view of my movements!
Ah well

You did well to stay sweet and calm. I'd be violently indignant! As if you were going to rob off with a 50p Mr Man book from a car boot.
