Day to myself

My sister has taken both kids off to Edinburgh zoo today so Ive got the whole day to myself! Im going to go for lunch with a friend but apart from that I want to sort the house out - I know, crap way to spend a day of rest but it really needs doing and Ill feel SO much better when it's done.

Im going to go right through and do a proper spring clean and sort out - how do you suggest I tackle it? I always end up making more mess than I started with - do you have a system to get it all done so I still have time for a nap before they return!?

Have a nap first becca no tips i always make a big mess first and then it getssortedfrom there! i've lost you on MSN so can you start it if you want to chat Not that I want to pull you away from your housework!

Don't think a day would be long enough in our house! I'd choose the room that was depressing me the most and concentrate on getting that spick and span and clutter free. Get loads of bin bags and be ruthless!

miranda2 · 20/01/2004 09:40

Definitely have the nap first! or after lunch. If youleave it to the end, you won't do it. I'd go with choose one room and blitz it. If you've got a washing machine and dryer you could do all the washing at the same time - I always feel better when the washing bin is empty, its one of my main stress indicators! And there's somethng v.satisfying about the washig machine doing its stuff.
I've got a day to myself too - I kept this day free at work to write my book, but other things have come up so I wouldn't get a totally free day and its useless having a part day. So I'm going to blitz throught the things that have to be done, then go clothes shopping!!!!

Claire, your showing as offline on msn

I dont have a dryer thats why there is so much damn washing to do as I struggle to get it dry especially in this weather

I think Ill write a list - feeling quite nauseous at the sheer amount I have to do!

oooo! be very very ruthless otherwise you end up like me... just shifting crap from one room/shelf/corner to another.... also try not to do a me...

i'lll just clear this shelf and take this book upstairs...and put it on this shelf... but this shelf needs clearing i'll put this in this cupboard... oh but this cupbaord could do with emptying out...i'll hoover it out...

and so it goes on throughout the whole house until i have achieved absolutely guffins... except have piles of crap everywhere !!!! and dd and dh have returned to a house in a bigger mess than before... (not to mention the 'quick surfs' on the net, tea break, watch crap telly, fall asleep for 15 mins etc///

another thing... get a charity box out... very good for decluttering... clutter someone elses life!!!

if you don't love it or use it... chuck it! (read somewhere this week can't remember where... wish it was the observer... but i think it was the radio times!!!

most of all ... have a nice day!!!!!

Have a opack of black bags tucked into your trousers and throw anythig away you have not used for a year - me and DP did this after Xmas and we had looooooads and loooooads to throw away - house is cleaner and less clutterd and we both felt terribly pleased with ourselves.

Also use those polish wipes as you go - just wipe drawers etc and throw away - easier than dry dusting and the dust doesn't get wafted from one place to another.

Becca if you're about and not too busy cleaning i'm online now

JanHR · 20/01/2004 13:48

Edinburgh Zoo. That is some trip out. You are in Newcastle, aren't you?

Beccarollover · 20/01/2004 16:09

Yep we are in Newcastle - Im quite nervous about the trip to be honest - think it was a bit ambitious but she rang me at 2pm and claimed everything was ok!!

Ive now cleared and cleaned kitchen and living room and they are spotless - just hall, landing, stairs, bathroom and 2 bedrooms to go eek

I find music very helpful when Im cleaning

oh and lunch was lovely
