Security tag left on bag - how do I get it off?

I bought a bag in H&M on Friday and they left the bl@@dy security tag on it (which begs th question "Why did the alarms not go off when I left the store". I mean, I set them off occasionally without a security tag so why the slience when I left the store with one??)

It's a bog standard one with no dye - I know the removal involves a magnet, i remember aprevious thread but can't find it. I want to avoid having to go back to return it to the store. I could try sawing it off with a hacksaw as it seems loose enough to do this but don't want to damage the bag.

Try taking it to a local store where they know you, with your receipt? Dorothy Perkins have the magnets I think, and Top Shop.

SoupDragon · 30/04/2006 08:48

The local stores are all near the H&M anyway. I simply can't be ar$ed to go all the way, park etc etc. :o Too lazy!

How annoying. I think you might have to go back to the shop, easier said than done if you have little ones and a baby in tow, I know!

Do you know anyone that works in another shop that could help you out? Or keep it on as a sort of strange bag charm? Maybe not!

I bought a lovely christening dress for my dd - travelled miles to a special shop for it. Only to find the huge magnetic disc still on it when we got home. It had been a major palavar to get to the shop in the first place - and was an even bigger one to get the damn thing off. (That would have looked good in the photos!)

I once bought a pack of sleep suits from Tescos and when I got home noticed the tag was still on. By that point I'd lost/binned the receipt so was too scared to go back in case they thought I'd stolen them!

Anyway I tried to remove the tag -it was really difficult and I ended up damaging one of the sleepsuits a bit as I was using all sorts of tools! Didn't really matter as only a sleepsuit though. So if you try and remove it be careful

(PS -forgot to say that the shop alarm did go off as I left but the security guard stopped an old couple, one of which was in a wheelchair, behind me. I felt really bad when I discovered tag and realised it was me that had set it off Blush

TinyGang · 30/04/2006 09:14

Oh Betty the shame!Grin

I phoned the shop but couldn't easily get back. They told me to go to a nearer one that the owner had some tenuous connection with.

When I got there it was one of these trendy sports shops all chrome, blaring music and youngsters. Nothing like the posh shop I'd origianlly gone to!

As I walked in with my dd's frilly white christening dress the alarm went off. God, that took some explainingBlush

birdsnest · 30/04/2006 10:27

I know its a faff but I think you should go back to the shop.If you damage it getting it off yourself them I dont think they will take it back.
Happened to me with a ted baker top that I bought in john lewis.I rang them before I took it back though because I was worried that I would set the alarms off going back in( I didnt! ).

cod · 30/04/2006 10:27

my very handy bil got one off once but it took him ages

SoupDragon · 30/04/2006 10:50

It'll end up costing me a fortune to take it back because I'll obviously have to do some more shopping to justify the hassle of going into town :o

Thanks.

Do you know anyone who will be shopping there in the next few days.Could they take it,with the receipt and get it removed???

alibubbles · 30/04/2006 12:40

This happened to me too, I bought a suit for my DD from Fenwicks at Brent Cross. I rang them and they sent someone out to do it the next day. I am about 30 mins drive on a good day, but they phoned when they left to let me know what time to expect them.

They said I could try and get it off, but it would explode red dye all over the garments!

Nbg · 30/04/2006 13:05

What sort of tag is it Soupy?

Is it the one with a longish part thats attached to a round pin?

If so, if the tag is loose enough and you can see the pin, a pair of those sharp plier things will get it off.
Thats what the shoplifters use anyway Grin

eastendgirl · 30/04/2006 13:09

Some Oxfam shops have the magnets as well.

SoupDragon · 30/04/2006 13:50

Long plastic tag, metal pin and dome bit. No ink.

Now worried that if I try to plier it off and fail they won't take it off for me :o

Mind you, the question still remains - why didn't the alarm go off when I left the shop? What's the point if the system doesn't work?

You'll need sharp ones for it to work.

If you ever go in to TK Maxx, you can see how the tag thing works. All it does is hold on to the long part of the tag, it gets held down and the assistant actually pulls the round pin off.

You might even be able to prize it off yourself if it's loose.

i had this happen to me.. woolies.. cardigan.. and was too mortified to take it back to the store as i was sure they would look at me like i was a shoplifter!!!!... this went on for soo long that the cardi... aged 12-18 months would now no longer fot my dd (who it was bought for ) now aged 4!!!!... dh saw it hanging on the landing the otehr week and got so fed up woth it... took a hammer and chisel to it and pronto off it came.... he said he had to be careful but he said it was pretty easy....

good luck!!!!

jamsam · 30/04/2006 15:15

if you happen to have a very strong magnet laying about, that will pull out he metal pih, failing that a hammer will do the same job, just watch out for those ones with red dye...
i sound like a shoplifter now!!!!!

Nbg · 01/05/2006 10:09

So Soupy...

Is the bag in one piece still or did you chicken out? Grin

LadyTophamHatt · 01/05/2006 10:19

easy.

You need to lever the pin out.
Hold the tag part and get a knife/screwdriver under to pin and just lever it off.
It might take a few attampts but it's worked for me.

BTW I'm not a thief
