... in my garden amongst the weeds, a very dog eared & soiled piece of paper with the following written on it:

"I call it the Absent Samaritan. Because for many people, help never comes. The Good Samaritan theme has ? ? many folk to take a positive look at their neighbours and has raised our understanding of who our neighbours are, but there's a dangerous assumption that goes along with the theme. It's the danger of assuming that there always is a Good Samaritan, that somebody always does turn up to help"

Do you think it is an omen?

(I should add that the house I live in was once a vicarage.)

I don't think it's an omen. It's just an old bit of paper with something interesting written on it.

It sounds as if it is a bit from a sermon.

i think its a very pessimistic view of life. i would rather look at my neighbours and hope that they would come to my aid or rescue should i be in trouble, than to go around thinking that to assume they would help is a stupid thing to do.

you see i truly believe that most people are good.

last year i started to go to meetings in london, use the public transport system, the underground ( eek couldn't read the bloody maps)

and dya know what? 2 out of 3 people were exceptionally nice. they completely blew me away...all except bus drivers ( who i am convinced arn't real and run on batteries)

interesting thing to find. i feel very sorry for the author

How exciting. Not an omen..(well I don't beleive in omens) sad and derpessing though for the person who wrote it

winnie · 02/05/2006 15:29

I was only joking about the omen really.

I agree that it is a very sad view of life.

I am one of those "sad" people who like finding lists etc so I always love finding things like this so i just wanted to share it :)

custardo, like you I believe most people are good or at least most people have something redeeming about them.
