bought dd two gold fish(different breeds but same idea)saturday, had tank for 8 days before to get water ready for them etc...first fish lasted 2 days,s tarted sitting at bottom of tank and only moving occasionally then it was frantic flapping of fins..next morning found her floating at topSad
took her to pet shop with sample of tank water and they said amonia too high, buy a plant, dont feed other fish for 24 hours and theyll replace the fish at weekend to ensure water is ok by then.
get home put plant in other fish swimming about madly as normal..last night sat in corner at bottom of tank..similar to other one....still there..but what can i do????dont want both to 'float'Sad..dd is v.upset

my little sister names her goldfish after simpsons characters and so many have died she's running out of names!
they found that getting an oxygenator thatblows bubbles into the tank has really helped and the last ones have been going strong for over a year.

they seem like easy pets but i had many die when i was little too...

panicpants · 26/04/2006 08:51

Do you have a filter?

if not it might be an idea to invest in one.

I'd buy lots ol plants not just one. You can also buy drops to put into tanks that remove nitrate and ammonia from tap water when setting up new tanks.

Hope this helps.

panicpants · 26/04/2006 08:53

btw i've found that it's easier to keep tropical fish than goldfish!

EvesMama · 26/04/2006 08:55

yes ahve got filter and bought drops to put in that speed up the process of bacteria that they need..darent go and look now..it was just literally sat on bottom on tankSad

its still there, floating above gravel now, but still not moving a lot..does come to side of tank when you go close, but it was so lively up to yesterday..wonder if its missing the other one?

You may have added the fish too soon then.

Oh dear.

If it dies it might be best to start over, buy some different water conditioner as well as the one you've got to add bacterier, and leave the new water WITH lots of plants a couple of weeks before adding any fish.

I'm sorry but it looks like the second fish is going the same way as the first.

panicpants · 26/04/2006 09:02

How much food are you giving. 2 fish would only need the tiniest of pinches once a day. Too much food will poison the water.

EvesMama · 26/04/2006 09:03

Sad..we already dissapointed dd by having the tank but no fish in for 8 day(a day longer than their reccomended time)..dp didnt want them in first place..i can almost here 'i told you so' alreadySad

It will sound awful..but when my little sisters first fishies started to die my mum would remove the dead one, put a sheet over the tank and tell her they were sleeping and couldn't be disturbed..while my dad made a frantic trip to the petshop for a new one..
some goldfish are just 'sicky' and can't handle being relocated so will die no matter what you do. Sad
fingers crossed this one makes it though!

EvesMama · 26/04/2006 19:08

well she was lively this afty, but very inactive agin now??what are fish meant to do??!! i havent a clue?..is she sleeping?

Do you have a light on the tank? We have 2 fish and as soon as I switch the light on, they swim around frantically.
Sounds like you are doing everything you can, fingers crossed that the little fishy survives!

HappyMumof2 · 26/04/2006 19:32

I think some fish are stronger than others. I bought 4 goldfish 1+ years ago. 2 died within the first few weks and the other two are still going! Good luck with surviving fish!:)

Hope little fishy is still ok, its worth waiting until the petshop next weekend if thats what the petshop advise.
I got our 2nd fish from a different petshop as at the 1st petshop, there were a couple of dead fish in some of the tanks.

EvesMama · 30/04/2006 19:20
