Play Station or X-Box which is the better system

My ds wants a playstation or Xbox for his next birthday or christmas. (He will be 6). It seems that there are more games in the shops for playstation but as neither of us are into games consoles at all I wondered which system people thought was best and why.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

I don't do games, but dp has ps1 and xbox.
xbox is better than ps2 (in his opinion) but games are expensive/less choice. Also if friends have them it is useful to have the same (swapping games, playing together)

DD2 is 6, and there are very few xbox games suitable for her age. She uses the ps1(second hand kids games are very available and cheap)

xbox has slighly better graphics

but a playstation definitely better for games/playability

ds says they are both as good as each other. he has both. ps2 familys, xbox his.
