I dont understand hoe for example Majorca, is a 2 hour flight away, and they have a time difference of an hour, but Lanzarote, a 4 hour flight away, has no time difference..................someone please explainBlush

It's all to do with time zones. The world is divided by imaginary lines.

DumbledoresGirl · 22/04/2006 20:30

Time difference is determined by how far west or east you are from Greenwich. Majorca must be 2 time zones east of Greenwich whereas Lanzarotte must be more or less due south of Greenwich and therefore in the same time zone.

Get it now? Smile

It's to do with the verticle lines on the glode (longitude I think) you can go as far south as you like in the same time zone - but travel a little way along a horizontal line (maybe latitude) and you change times

It's to do with the horizon and the way the sun comes up ....

I think??

Actually, that's not a lot of help is it? Maybe someone with an ounce of intelligence will explain

bubblerock · 22/04/2006 20:32

Not a scientific response, but, I think it depends on which direction you are flying, either across the globe (crossing time zones) which will add/subtract hours or down the globe - I think, but am not 100%

flobbleflobble · 22/04/2006 20:33

time zones change according to how far east or west you go - but not according to how far north or south. So you could travel for hours north or south without changing time zone.

bubblerock · 22/04/2006 20:34

Visually isn't the world divided up like a chocolate orange (24 time zones) with Grenwich being 0

waterfalls · 22/04/2006 20:36

Ok, I think I get it, am picturing the earth and sun, and how going different directions would effect daylight, IYKWIM Grin

Bubblerock - excellent! Think of a chocolate orange: Lanzarotte is in the same segment as us, just lower down!

waterfalls · 22/04/2006 20:39

I got it, so obvious nowGrin
