Can anyone tell me where the "nicer" bits of manchester are? DH has changed his mind about moving down south, and has now suggested manchester. We don't live far away now, but don't know it at all. So if anyone can help, please do, DH just said "look at houses in Manchester" and left me to it!!!

Areas of Sale, Timperley and Altrincham are nice - they are in South Manchester. Hale and Bowdon are very nice but quite pricey (some footballers live round about!)

There are some excellent schools in South Manchester too.

Katemum · 19/04/2006 20:34

I believe that Didsbury is nice.

Ledodgy · 19/04/2006 20:37

Another vote for Didsbury and Altrincham. I've also heard that Heaton Mersey is nice too.

thirtysomething · 19/04/2006 20:37

depends what you want and how far from centre! Bramhall, Cheadle Hulme, Wilmslow are all very nice with good schools, but strictly speaking Cheshire border. Nearer the centre there's Didsbury which is very trendy and full of university types and yuppies but lots of family houses too. On the other side Prestwich, Whitefield are nice, but you have to be careful as certain bits are very OAP oriented! Altrincham and Hale are nice too, with good tram links to the centre and very good schools, though they are certainly pricey areas! It really depends what your budget and main constraints/interests are.

mazzystar · 19/04/2006 20:39

Hale is great if you like that sort of thing but £££ and 45 mins on tram into City Centre.
Chorlton is a bit groovier and closer, not quite so many ££

Rhubarb · 19/04/2006 20:41

It didn't have any nice bits when I used to hang round Manchester!

momentrylapseofreason · 19/04/2006 20:41

A lot of North / central Manc has ++ social problems - I would avoid longsight / levenshulme / miles platting / gorton / harpurhey / blackley.
Didsbury / Chorlton OK - but pricey and lots of pubs / bars / takeaways and burgalaries. Ramsbottom - 10 miles north of Manc is nice if you want something a bit more rural. Altincham is nice - South of Manc but with tram link.

BethAndHerBrood · 19/04/2006 20:42

This is great, thanks a lot, anyone else??Grin

Altrincham's got an ice-rink too!

Lucycat · 19/04/2006 20:47

I would agree with momentary - South Manchester is nicer! Didsbury is very wine bar-ish, not too ken on Chorlton, bit overrated but that's just my opinion, Stockport schools tend to be better tha Manchester, I live in Heaton Moor, which is close to Didsbury but not... iykwim. Grin

What are you looking for in an area/schools/access to city centre -tell us and we'll find you a house!

Lucycat · 19/04/2006 20:47

sorry rhuby, they've closed the ice rink and are building houses on the land Sad

fennel · 19/04/2006 20:50

depends on your price range, Didsbury is a lot more expensive than most of Manchester (not than Altrincham). Chorlton is very trendy, lots of bars and environmental enthusiasm and health food shops. some bits are very expensive but there are cheaper bits which are a bit more scruffy. Didsbury is much more traditional. Heaton Mersey and Heaton Moor are nice. Sale is OK too, right on the tramline and has lots of facilities like swimming pool, and a new arts centre.

GDG · 19/04/2006 20:51

45 min into town from Hale? I'd say 25min.

If you want good schools Trafford is a good borough to be in - second suggestions by Jools - Sale and Altrincham are great. Hale is lovely but v. expensive (Sale and Alt not cheap either though). Dh works in Wilmslow and that's a nice area - again, not cheap.

Lucycat · 19/04/2006 20:51

How's life down south fennel? missing us oop north?

GDG · 19/04/2006 20:51

Alti is getting a new ice rink though. Also a new cinema being built next to the 'big' Tesco.

BethAndHerBrood · 19/04/2006 20:53

We've got upto about £250k to spend, need good primary schools, not bothered about city centre tbh, not keen on the "town" bit. Would like some green space, and stuff for us to do at weekends as a family.

Mmmmmm...........maybe need to think this through a bit more!!!

GDG · 19/04/2006 20:53

Might be easier if you tell us what you are looking for, what kind of house and budget - lots of people have suggested Altrincham, Hale, Wilmslow but they aren't cheap.

GDG · 19/04/2006 20:54

x posts!

fennel · 19/04/2006 20:58

lucycat, it's lovely Grin. am clearly country bumpkin at heart not big city type. houses are not as nice for the same money as in Manchester though.

Lucycat · 19/04/2006 20:59

Envy it's been pissing it down today here!! good for the complexion though!!

Try looking \link{http://www.alanainsworth.co.uk/indexsales.htm\here} for some ideas! They are based in Heaton Moor.

Been glorious sunshine here today Lucycat! Where teh devil are you?! We had a bit of rain this morning but I walked to school and back this afternoon in a t-shirt and was out in the garden with the kids

gigwig · 19/04/2006 21:50

South manchester/stockport have decent houses in your price range, nice local shops and facilities with easy access to city centres and peak district/countryside.

cheadle/gatley are nice with lots of parks, easy to get to countryside and other places for days out yet quick to get into central manchester, and with a 'villagey' feel too with their own shops etc.

sale, hale and altrincham can have big problems if you will need to commute into city centre - roads are bad, tram is packed.

My favourite area is heaton mersey/moor. Would like to live there.

Davenport in Stockport too is nice.

Lucycat · 19/04/2006 22:06

Got rained on in town today - huge black cloud! our grass is like a swamp! even the sun this afternoon can't dry it out!

How come your kids are back at school gdg? Stockport and Cheshire aren't back till next week!

MerlinsBeard · 19/04/2006 22:10

Hazel Grove is nice...i look out of the boys window and i can see lyme park :)
