Can anyone tell me where the "nicer" bits of manchester are? DH has changed his mind about moving down south, and has now suggested manchester. We don't live far away now, but don't know it at all. So if anyone can help, please do, DH just said "look at houses in Manchester" and left me to it!!!

JoolsToo · 19/04/2006 22:16

GDG · 19/04/2006 23:23

Lucycat - we're in Trafford so schools broke up end of March and back today - weird, I know, as it's straight after Easter weekend!

juuule · 19/04/2006 23:26

Another vote for Didsbury. Very eco-friendly too Smile.

Troutpout · 20/04/2006 09:06

Not Macclesfield

Cappucino · 20/04/2006 09:51

vote here for Chorlton - my mate lives there - it's cheaper than Didsbury but very nice and has nice cafes

niceglasses · 20/04/2006 09:56

Chorlton is a bit of a mad place really I think.....lived there for a while. Very trendy trendy down Beach Rd, very different oop by Safeways etc.......I always quite like the difference so close together.....

pacinofan · 20/04/2006 09:56

Speaking as someone who lives 'up North' agree with majority of posts, however, would disagree slightly re: good schools.

Hazel Grove, Davenport and Cheadle Hulme are fairly pleasant places to live but the secondary schools in my opinion are simply not up to scratch. We are currently in the position of moving into a better catchment area for secondary schooling and more than doubling the mortgage to do so. Worth having a really good look at the league tables, etc, as the majority of primary schools are fine but not so with the secondary schools. Good luck with your househunting! x

I was born in Stockport and Heaton Moor, or any of the Heatons are lovely.

I then lived in Chorlton and it is fab fab fab, lots of bars and delis, village feel, good set of people. All my friends live there and have no complaints on the schools. £££££££ though for houses. (niceglasses - I used to live off Beech Road! )

Didsbury is also lovely, again ££££££.

Don't bother with north, no nice bits imo.

niceglasses · 20/04/2006 10:04

OO I lived just of Beach Rd - erm Hardy Ave and then IvyGreen. Miss it in a way......

Tinker · 20/04/2006 10:06

Yes, avoid North Manchester - Worsley nice but too many horrid bits.

oliveoil · 20/04/2006 10:07

it's Beech dear, Beech.

I would love to still live there, but it is expensive and I wouldn't have my MIL for free childcare then!

cod · 20/04/2006 10:07

OO had the tuna thing

it was ok

niceglasses · 20/04/2006 10:11

I wasn't totally joking re Levenshulme and round there, are some nice bits if a bit studenty. Prestwich? Has some lovely old houses.

granarybeck · 20/04/2006 10:12

another vote for chorlton, i'd love to move there, but the kids are settled in schools. Not sure what the secondary schools are like though. I know lots people who are happy with the primary.

oliveoil · 20/04/2006 10:12

Levenshulme is horrid, it is supposed to be on the up but has a lot of gang problems.

granarybeck · 20/04/2006 10:13

urmston is quite nice now

fennel · 20/04/2006 10:14

Chorlton High school gets mixed reviews, some people really like it and some worry, especially those with girls as it has far more boys. many girls get siphoned off to Whalley range high. some people send their children over the border to Stretford Grammar from Chorlton.

i lived in Moss Side for 5 years. not the roughest bit. i liked it. wouldn't particularly choose it with children though.

niceglasses · 20/04/2006 10:15

Am a bit out of touch as back in NE but I always thought Levenshulme okay. I'm quite jealous, wld like to be going back to Manch. F FANTATSTIC SHOPPING!!!!!!!!!

Not that I'm shallow or owt.

JoolsToo · 20/04/2006 10:16

the secondary schools in South Manchester are better - they have some good comps and also grammar schools

granarybeck · 20/04/2006 10:18

thanks fennel. when i'd looked i'd struggled to find decent secondarie but presumed there must be s ome, i hadn't looked at stretford grammar. my friend's dd goes to whalley range and has had lots of problems.

fennel · 20/04/2006 10:25

the generally agreed "top" Comp for manchester is Parrs Wood high, in Didsbury. if i had 250K i wouldn't spend it on a 2 bed terrace in Didsbury for that price, but there are cheaper areas nearby. for example we lived in Northenden, near Didsbury, in the Parrs Wood catchment area and also with good primaries. children from there also go across the border to Sale grammar.

i have clearly spent far too much time absorbing information about schools Blush
