He went in tonight, after yesterday phonng and asking that the new shift pattern (the fifth in 18 months) be reconsidered as we couldn't manage childcare. She (his boss) said OK, come in an hour early and we'll discuss it. Well, he told her that he had applied for flexible working arrangements as we have two kids under six as well as Sam. She flipped, 'we don't need to comply with no effing legislation you can F off I don't care if you have a life it's not my problem'

DH left the room, his line manager went ina and said look, they've got a really violent SN son, I've heard the phone calls, he's good and we don't want to lose him. She then threw him off site.

He's to phone Personnel tomorrow to find out wtf is going on.

She said they don't have to consider his flexible working as if they don't want him to do it they'll just write 'not good for buiness' in the letter,. I know they can't do that.

I'm angry (My Dh is a quiet soul who works hard and doesn't deserve this) and scared as his is our only real income.

We're off to CAb tomorrow the minute we've spoken to Personnel, but we have to take all 3 ds's as he can't face it without me (he is really shy) which'll be fun!.

I'm so angry with his employers. they're not a small company- one of the world's biggest- and they've already cost us a small fortune by making him work more, he commutes and we pay bridge tolls of £5a night. I just want him out of there now.

Hope all went well!

desperateSCOUSEwife · 19/04/2006 18:20

peachy how horrible for your dh

just a thought but can you speak to the disability commision and see what rights there are

Yorkiegirl · 19/04/2006 18:21

blimey peachy, hope you can sort this out!
I haven't anything to add, but I wanted to post for support.

popsycalindisguise · 19/04/2006 18:24

Peachy - this is awful.

Let me email another MNer (rickshaw) who helped me lots with flexible working things. She has a 10 month old so may not get back immediately - but I will link her to this thread......

PeachyClair · 19/04/2006 18:29

No, wasn't joking about interview tips Edam... will pass that on, thanks Grin. I'm good at interviews so it's hard for me to advise, iyswim.

he has registered the grievance, and is to go back tonight. he's not the first to complain about her (third) and not the first to be sent off site like this 9again, third). Seems to be her way. Fortunately he's only on tonight then has two days off. Well, should do. Goodness only knows what shift pattern they're running today Wink (sigh)

he has also been put forward for a job in Cardiff by an agency, and has the details of 20 more from the job centre. he's decided to look for something local, even if it menas a drop in income.... by the time you take in bridge fees / WTC / my means tested grant we wouldn't lose out that much anyway.

he's a lot more optimistic today and it really cheered him up seeing all the messages- thanks Grin. Dh didn't get MN until this happned, and we needed support with Sam. Now he thinks it's great. Grin

I'll obv be on tenterhooks tonight but will update when anything happens.

Peachy - I can't offer anything specific to help, but just wanted to post to say I hope it works out, "She" sounds like a total nightmare, hope your DH gets something good, either there or elsewhere, soon.

edam · 19/04/2006 20:11

Must be a relief to know that there are lots of possiblities out there. Hope his shift tonight goes well. Boss is clearly a nutter.

stapo1 · 19/04/2006 20:24

Not sure if repeating what has already been said but she is surely in breach of the company regs for not following internal disciplinary procedures. It is not normal particularly in large companies for middle managers to have the authority to suspend (except for gross misconduct pending investigation) or dismiss without consultation with HR & first recording formal warnings.
I don't think requesting a flexible work pattern constitutes gross misconduct.
Also at all times they must demonstrate equality & if others have had requests for shift changes considered then they must give you sound business reaons in writting as to why your request cannot be looked at favourably.
Apart from all that waffle what B*. Good luck

bossykate · 19/04/2006 20:41

so sorry to hear about this. good luck to you and your dh getting the best possible outcome.

Rhubarb · 19/04/2006 20:44

hub2dees suggestion was a good one. I would follow that.

I haven't had a proper chat today but he didn't come early which is good. he ut the hard copy (not sure if fax arrived- never used the one on our scanner before) in Big Boss's tray and three people said that if it was his resignation could he please take it back out, so he's obviously valued.

He's off now for a few days, but I think he's given up on the industry. Last time he was looking he point blank refused to consider anything else (much to my annoyance at time) but I notice nothing he has picked up is in the trade.

From waht the big boss has said before, he prefers a survival of the fittest approach... eat or be eaten. Bit of a prat.

Apparently she is now the subject of a racism complaint, after a colleague wrote Happy Easter on the board in his native language and she tried to suspend him for writing onscenities.

She's not her own best friend this woman, is she?
