Strange spellings of 'normal' names ...

Do you have strange spellings for normal names of your children?
I was wondering why people do this ...
At DS' school there is a Jaxon, a Kaytee and a Tonee ...

starlove you're not wrong.
I'm a journalist and can tell you that basically you have to ask how to spell just about everyone's name.
Sarah or Sara?
Jane or Jayne?
Smith or Smyth fgs.
I mean unless your name is Bob Jones you could have it misspelled.
People misspell mine ALL the time grrr so I chose the children's names carefully, or so I thought.
I have never been asked how to spell DS1 or DD's (old-fashioned and less common but somehow familiar) names. DS2's is in the top 100 but people do spell that wrong. Hah! Hoist by me own petard then.

ma2cra · 17/04/2006 23:37

A favourite misspelling of mine was my cousin's little lad - Ethan - who received a birthday card addressed to Heathen.

ma2cra · 17/04/2006 23:37

(It wasn't me, by the way, I just found it funny)

Cristina7 · 17/04/2006 23:38

My DS is Dominic. He once got something addressed to Demonic, appropriately enough.

hana · 17/04/2006 23:38

have always assumed that the parents didn't know how to spell the name conventionally and just guessed

My name is often misspelt. People often elongate it too, assuming that the full name is my proper name.

On asking my parents why I had the shorter version, they said everyone would shorten it anyway, lol.

waterfalls · 18/04/2006 00:27

My neices are called Destini and Tiffini

collision · 18/04/2006 00:36

My Dh is called Luca.

Beautiful name.

Soooooo many people try and spell it as Looker!! (pronounced Lewker!!!) Arrrghhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

Had a friend called Keren and she despised her name as she had to spell it all the time.

dont like Aimee or Jazmyn or names not spelt 'properly'.

I do like Lucie and Elisabeth with an 's' and prefer Rebekah to Rebecca.

ghosty · 18/04/2006 02:16

I think there is a difference between ordinary names with odd spelling and ordinary names with 'foreign' spelling ...
For example Lucie (I assume that is the french spelling), Cristina is definitely spanish spelling, Elisabeth is a french version, Meghan is (I have been told) the irish version of Megan, etc etc ...
After I started this thread I thought, blimey ... I have done it with DD Blush but only in the shortened version of her name so it doesn't count Grin - to clarify: her name is Abigail but we call her Abi ... it made sense just to drop the 'gail' and not make up a new spelling like Abby or Abbie ... but on all her name tags and stuff like passport, birth certificate, kindy enrollment forms etc her name is Abigail anyway so that is why it doesn't count IYSWIM? Blush

Tutter · 18/04/2006 07:00

some chav tendencies in this arena. just now - birthday song on cbeebies - good example was makayla (pronounced the same as michaela). hmmm.

Pruni · 18/04/2006 07:06

Aimee is the French spelling, though, not a jazzed up modern spelling of Amy.
I have seen a Helayna. Not pretty but functional I suppose.

monkey · 18/04/2006 08:17

I love the name Luca. I wanted it for ds but dh wouldn't hear of it. There^s loads now where I live, both Luca and Lucas. Prefer Luca. It was a song, can't remember the woman's name.

lol @ yooneek.

ItalianJob · 18/04/2006 08:22

Quite a few babies called Luca that I've met as well - I think they are were inspired by Luka Kovic from ER!

spacedonkey · 18/04/2006 08:23

The weirdest one I've come across is "Micheal" instead of "Michael" Shock

MrsSchadenfreude · 18/04/2006 08:53

I don't have a problem with different spellings - like Katherine/Lucie/Elisabeth, but it does grate to see Kaytee, Annushka, Annerstayzia etc. It just looks like the parents can't spell!

MrsBadger · 18/04/2006 08:56

Doesn't one of the Scandinavian countries have an Approved Names list with only one spelling for each one? Guess it simplifies a lot of paperwork...

Aero · 18/04/2006 08:58

The song was by Suzanne Vega -
'My name is Luca.
I live on the second floor............'

Can't remember the title. Lovely name though and of course there's Dr Kovic (??) in ER too.

hunkermunker · 18/04/2006 09:03

Nobody's mentioned Feebee Grin

DS1's name not that unusual, but really often spelt wrong (and pronounced wrong - even after people have heard me say it - perhaps it's me getting it wrong...rofl!).

DS2's name...shall we just say it didn't occur to us to put a "y" in the middle of it!

purplemonkeydishwasher · 18/04/2006 09:07

there's a trend in our area for boys calles T-Jay. WTF?!

hunkermunker · 18/04/2006 09:08

Hooker?!

collision · 18/04/2006 09:19

what about Shivorn??????? (Siobhan!!) Grin

Sorry about the Aimee thing....didnt know it was french!

Have a friend called Lindsay which is the boys way to spell it....she has had real problems spelling it over the years and it was just because her Dad spelt it wrong on the birth certificate.

babyonboard · 18/04/2006 09:22

my ds is Oskar..seems unusual but it's the spelling of it in d.p's country so thats okay..lol
we did argue about it at first though as i know he'll be forever having to say..'with a K'
and with the surname he's got too..argh..poor boy..hehee

katzg · 18/04/2006 09:34

i've got a Phoebe which people my family included seem to insist on spelling Pheobe!

And DD2 is Annalise which i have seen spelt a number of ways too, Annaliese, Analise ect

i had kinda hoped to have chosen names which didn't have hundreds of spellings like mine, Kathryn but nope!
