Do you have strange spellings for normal names of your children?
I was wondering why people do this ...
At DS' school there is a Jaxon, a Kaytee and a Tonee ...

At least one name has been mentioned that belongs to a MNers child.

Not telling which one though.

oh each to their own anywhere as Lockets says. plenty of people think my DD's name is rubbish anyway so who am I to talk Grin

blueteddy · 17/04/2006 22:09

I once came across a little boy called Konna (Conner)

jenthehen · 17/04/2006 22:09

One thing I did find was that whilst teaching in large classes of 30+ children those with slightly unusual names or spellings did stand out from the "normal" names (I did once have a class with five Amys, 3 Lukes, 3 Callums and 3 Lauras). Different spellings can add a degree of individuality.

georginarf · 17/04/2006 22:09

anyWAY

crazydazy · 17/04/2006 22:11

DS is Dylan but I hate the version of "Dillon" even though its perfectly normal and when people spell his name like this it riles me.

starlover · 17/04/2006 22:11

I have to say that it isn't just weird spellings that are condemned to a lifetime of having to tell people how to spell their name.

i always thought my name was pretty bog standard... but NO!

It's always Claire, that's with an i and an e
Stephens, that's with a ph not a v

kiskidee · 17/04/2006 22:12

sometimes parents are just clueless. like the poor girl whose name is spelt 'Channel' she keeps correcting others that it is pronounced 'Chanel'.

georginarf · 17/04/2006 22:13

starlover, you have similar probs to me as middle name Claire and maiden name Stevenson.

my married name also has many spellings - I could be called something really outlandish and have just as many probs getting people to spell my name right TBH

OldieMum · 17/04/2006 22:15

Another thing is children whose parents have given them mispronounced versions of their names. When I was a school, there was a boy called Sean, who pronounced it 'Seen' (presumably from seeing Sean Connery's name - this was the 60s). I hope he never found out. There was also a 'Loyce' (Lois).

OldieMum · 17/04/2006 22:15

'at school'

thewomanwhothoughtshewasahat · 17/04/2006 22:26

pmsl at Channel. we had teh opposite with one of our neighbours. I think she was called Chanel, but no-one had told her mum who insisted on pronouncing it "Channel" (not Channul as in the tunnel, admittedly, but Chan-el with a hard ch) as in "CHAN-ELL GET INSIDE AND EAT YER TEA NOW"

Flum · 17/04/2006 22:30

Jennipher !!!! on Americas Next Top Model

Cristina7 · 17/04/2006 22:34

I came across the name CharLynn (maybe Charlene?) on an American site.

georginarf · 17/04/2006 22:47

oh yes, that Jennipher was really strange

nzshar · 17/04/2006 23:02

ahhh as Cristina7 has just pointed out for me and as starlover says its not always the wierd spellings.
Im a Sharlene which is a spelling that is more common in the southern hemisphere than the northern hemispheres Charlene :)

Cristina7 · 17/04/2006 23:05

Talking of unusual spellings, what were my parents thinking of? Grin

Aero · 17/04/2006 23:12

My friend taught a boy called Nafan. (supposedly Nathan)

threebob · 17/04/2006 23:21

That's why we went for Bob - nobody has ever spelt it wrong, I can't think how you could mess up Robert (Rhobert maybe?)

I teach a Braedin, a Kaedon and a Heydon. Makes for some great music rhyming games.

Elf1981 · 17/04/2006 23:29

my dd is called Evelyn (thats Everlyn not Eve Lyn). We also call her Evie.
We got a load of cards at Xmas, written out to:
Everlynne, Evey, Evenley, Evelynne, Eveline, etc etc
So I personally think those who have unusal spellings are asking for trouble!
My sisters is Faye, she always gets stuff addressed to Fay.
Dodgy spellings I can almost live with, but when people ask me what she is called and I say, it annoys me when they repeat it but get it wrong!
