Bl**dy Hotmail!!! Help

JoolsToo · 17/04/2006 15:02

I can't remember my password - or rather I thought I could but its not recognising it! So I tried the first option when it asks me a question - my favourite character - I can't remember!!!! OR I can send myself an email - it has a link "How can I get e-mail at my Hotmail or MSN inbox if I forgot my password?" but when I press the link to see how - nothing happens.

Anyone have a clue?
Cheers!

ds says click on forgot password. when the box thingy comes up where you have to read it and type in the letters that becomes your password

SaintGeorge · 17/04/2006 18:16

Long time since I used hotmail. Let me muse on it for a while.

brimfull · 17/04/2006 18:16

I can't get my talktalk email account to work today. It won't recognise my password /username either.Conspiracy??

JoolsToo · 17/04/2006 18:17

done that twokids - then it goes onto another phase where you can remember a personal question (I can't!) or email yourself with a prompt on how to read it your email when you don't know your password but the 'help' isn't coming up!

Cut & paste of the help:

Note: It is important that you create a password and e-mail address that you can remember. The following tip may be helpful if you forget your password, but should not be considered a reliable way to enter your Microsoft Passport Network credentials (Unique information that you use to access restricted resources. For the Passport Network, credentials include your e-mail address and password. They may also include a mobile phone number and PIN, a smart card, or a security key.) .

If you forget your password, you may still be able to access your account.

When you sign in to a website or service, you are presented with a list of sign in options. If you select the Save my e-mail address and password sign in option when you sign in to the Passport Network on a computer, your credentials may be stored on that computer. Try signing into the Passport Network on that computer. If you can sign in, change your password to a strong but memorable password. For more information, see Change your password.

If you remember your e-mail address but not your password, and you have not used the Save my e-mail address and password sign in option, you can reset your password. For more information, see Reset your password.

Important

Adding an alternate e-mail address (An e-mail address that is different from your primary Passport Network e-mail address. The alternate e-mail address can help you reset your password if you cannot access your account on the Passport Network.) lets you easily reset a forgotten password. If you don't add an alternate e-mail address (An e-mail address that is different from your primary Passport Network e-mail address. The alternate e-mail address can help you reset your password if you cannot access your account on the Passport Network.) , you may not be able to easily reset your password and unlock your account. If you forget your password, you cannot recover it. However, the Passport Network can send password-reset instructions to your alternate e-mail address. This is the primary method for resetting your password. We strongly recommend that you provide an alternate e-mail address.

Your alternate e-mail address must be an e-mail address that you can access without using the same credentials (Unique information that you use to access restricted resources. For the Passport Network, credentials include your e-mail address and password. They may also include a mobile phone number and PIN, a smart card, or a security key.) that you use to sign in to the Passport Network.

Did you set an alternative email address when you first set up hotmail? Your main private email address maybe?

If so you should be able to click the forgotten password link and follow it through to the option to send an email. Then check your other email addresses to see what, if anything, turns up.

SaintGeorge · 17/04/2006 18:31

And when (if ?) you've sorted it all out, make a little document in word with your passwords and addresses in it Smile

JoolsToo · 17/04/2006 18:33

I have learned recently to email anything I want saved cos I've been having problems with my pc crashing and if I save anything in Word - kaboom! gone!

I do manage to be sensible occasionally.

Once or twice a year.
