Have just discovered that there are hundreds of ants all over my kitchen! They weren't there this morning!! They are in the fruit bowl, in the cupboard and streaming all over the worktop!!

Does anyone have any advice?

I was told by mn to use baking powder, cloves and put a jar of jam outside - working so far, at least being kept at bay!

I have battled ants for five years in this house (came back from holiday once to find my kitchen cupboards swarming with the little buggers) and last summer...for the first time... we didn't have a single one.

We have tried everything (natural and blow 'em to hell chemical) and I would advocate chemical every time. There is a spray called Dethlac which you can spray inside and out and it dries to a varnish-like finish which is waterproof. You can't use it where you prepare food but we took the plinths off the cupboard bases and sprayed it in there, and around the edges of the floor and put it (carefully) in the backs of cupboards (where the food is in packets/containers). The other product I use is called "Ant Stop!" - little traps, like black igloos and the ants go in and carry the poison back to their nests.

I promise you, Greensleeves - these two things work better than anything else I've tried, I couldn't believe it when we didn't have a single ant last summer (we did all this stuff last Spring). I bought them in an independent hardware-type shop but I think Lakeland Limited did the Ant Stop traps last year.

\link{http://www.pesthelp.co.uk/weshop/Ants.asp\This place does Dethlac - scroll down}

And \link{http://www.lakelandlimited.co.uk/product.aspx/!6065\Lakeland still do Ant Stop}

Boiled water - pour it over the nest if you can find it. This is what Mum did when she had same problem, also talc?

just boiled water I mean, but be careful!
