help me! when does lent officially end?

Is it Good Friday or Easter Monday? Because I really, really need some chocolate!

Hmm I always though Easter Sunday. However my colleagues were trying to convince me that it was Palm Sunday - would that suit? Grin Because that is 40 days after Shrove Wednesday.

Why are Sundays not counted in the 40 days?

Sundays are always a day of celebration in the Christian church and so they cannot be included in the 40 days of Lent. Sundays commemorate the Resurrection.

Hmm in our house Good Friday was a day of fasting and abstinence (soup for lunch and fish pie for tea, veneration of the cross at mass - hated that bit cos the alterboys wouldn't always wipe after the last person has kissed it...eww). Saturday it was all over and we went to midnight mass to light the first light etc in the church carpark and then Easter Sunday was chocolate - fest. Who says catholics don't have any fun?! Am very lapsed catholic now so not sure on the rules and regs!

I always thought Palm Sunday was the end of Lent... But Holy week, between Palm Sunday and Easter is also a time of fasting (abstinence) and so to all intents and purposes it might as well be part of Lent as well.

I'm CoE and I always thought that Lent finished at Sundown on Maundy Thursday - as that was when Jesus had the "last supper" with the disciples.....

googling I found that Orthodox Churches do count Sundays, start Lent on a Monday and finish on the Friday before Palm Sunday, but western churches start on Ash wednesday and don't count Sundays. Catholics at least should end Lent on Holy Thursday with the mass of the Lord’s Supper.

Cappucino, I gave up chocolate too! I also heard all sorts of different days as to when Lent is officially 'over'. A friend - whose husband is training to be a vicar, told me it was Palm Sunday - so hers was the day I used!! She also mentioned the thing about Sunday being a 'day off' from Lent, neither of us had ever heard about that and I decided not to bother with days off otherwise I'd never get through it.

actually dh's lentern vow was a bit of a cheat - no drinking alcohol at home. hmmm....

lipstickmum are you going to go back to chocolate or use it as a lifestyle change? I'm worried once I start, I'll be gone forever... after all if I've done 6 weeks...

Lifestyle change...? Are you mad? Hehe. When I actually think about it, I don't have huge amounts of chocolate every week, definitely not every day, maybe 3 times a week. The most I missed it was when I was out shopping and stopped for a 'coffee', I never have coffee, I always have a hot chocolate, kind of meets criteria of both 'coffee and cake'!

did you count hot chocolate? I had a couple of cups of cocoa around the time of the month --- medicinally of course. And I did have a bit of chocolate tart after dinner on visit to at mil's on grounds that a) it would be rude not to and b) it didn't really count because it was a dessert... but I did eat a lot of chocolate, 2 galaxies a day, so I'm feeling v proud despite bending the rules a bit

I'm absolutely sure you are not allowed to have any chocolate until Easter Sunday morning. Then you can eat as many eggs as you like in bed before breakfast!

If you are trying to work out where you would get to if you added 40 days to Ash Wednesday, can I point out that Sundays are not included in Lent?
I never knew that lent ended on Maundy Thursday and I am Catholic! It doesn't really matter anyway as Good Friday is the strictest fast day of the whole year.

I'm pretty sure for catholics that lent finishes midnight on the saturday and there certainly are no days off! The idea is that you have to give up something you enjoy. I was very naughty and chose to go to mass every day before school in the school chapel - to do this we were allowed to miss first period which was no hardship at all! In our family we had a tradition of going to the pictures on good friday but of course we couldn't have any sweets!
