I'm going up to Borough Market tomorrow. Never been before - anything I should know or look out for?

TIA

It's good fun, pretty busy, don't eat before you go as there's loads of stuff to try and some really good pastry stalls. Take a good strong shopping bag if you're going to buy lots of stuff as they're mostly flimsy.

Oh I love Borough Market, get some good cheese an an organic fry up in a bun and truffles and oh the list is ENDLESS

then you can take the kids to watch the river from Southward Bridge

Great day ou

get there early, it gets packed!
otherwise i agree with everything wm has said. Look in the little side streets, too - the Konditorei and cook shop, and all the shops along the same road. Then walk up and round the corner to the river, past the Golden Hinde, the Clink museum, and along the riverfront to Tate Modern - nice walk.

There's a fantastic oyster bar. Are you pregnant? If not, have oysters and champagne.

Apart from that just enjoy yourself. It's a wonderful place.

lahdeedah · 07/04/2006 14:01

Yes it's fab! Buy olives and fresh pesto and cheese, and yummy pastries for lunch.

Afterwards you could walk along to Tate Modern.

BingoStingo · 07/04/2006 14:01

there is used to be, 2 years ago, a big car park a little to the west on the main approach road (Borough Road?) it's one of those that looks like a building site. About a fiver for a couple of hours and a little walk to the market.

flashingnose · 07/04/2006 14:03

lol - cod, I'll do a hugo head count just for you Grin

If you go to Tate Modern they've rehung a gallery there and put in an Anish Kapoor sphere that you kind of walk into. It's purple and shiny and really wierd - you put your hands in and they kind of pass through where you'd expect the plastic shell to be (crap description) but dd loved it and so did we.
had to add that - t'was so fab

Blu · 07/04/2006 14:04

No there is no parking for miles and miles...go on the tube or bus. There is actually parking in some of the side strees behind Tate modern - you will pay a lot of money, though, on a meter, or in one of the ad hoc parking lots where they charge £8 per day!
tbh, Im not sure what time it opens - I have always got there at about 12 and it is solid!

suzywong · 07/04/2006 14:05

Oh BingoStingo, you've got the wrong market, it's Exmouth Market at the top of Clerkenwell Road that sells the donkey sausages (just down the road from the Golden Fish Bar...wonderful land that time forgot Italian Chippy)

I have to go away from this thread, it's too painful

welshmum · 07/04/2006 14:05

There's a hotel on the approach from the Tate side - you can use their car park for about a fiver

flashingnose · 07/04/2006 14:05

This is a recce to see if I can bear to take the three DCs next time, so thanks very much for the kid type ideas too Smile

SW, Does Perth have ANY markets?

suzywong · 07/04/2006 14:28

yes of course but none by an ancient cathedral and a mighty river nor ones that sell organic pork pies

bakedpotato · 07/04/2006 14:36

People queuing like Moscovites for vegetables ffs

Got so many dirty looks for bumping people's ankles with the buggy

I wouldn't go back with kids

suzywong · 07/04/2006 14:38

SNORT@ Muscovites

have to agree it is a tad poncey though

hoxtonchick · 07/04/2006 14:39

BingoStingo · 07/04/2006 19:07
