Naming a house

Can anyone help me with naming the house I am in the process of buying please?

The official postal address is No. 13 – the house doesn’t actually have a number on it and I noticed on the H.M Land Registry plans it is also numberless.
The current owners tell me that I could apply to the Post Office to have it changed to either 11A or a name – I believe it costs around £85.

I don’t really want to go down the 11A route, but can’t think of a name – I don’t want to do the usual “dunroving” “casablah” or any occupant name tying.

I have looked at the possibility of tying in the Street Name somehow, looking for a link between the Apostle the street is named after (son of Zebedee and Salome) and the number – but alas, there were only 12 Apostles!!

The nearest link I can find between the Apostle and the house location is that he was a fisherman and I live in a seaside town – the house is literally 200metres from the beach.
He is connected with cockle and scallop shells. Patron saint of arthritis and rheumatism if that’s any help!! (doesn’t help me any)

Can any one out there come up with something creative??? Please??

That’s very clever SD –

Anyone know of any Latin/foreign pretty sounding alternatives to the number 13??

Or a nice play with words ala Soupy?

Guess it's obviously not a White House, Green House, Red Gables, on a Hill Top, have anything in the garden to make it an Oak House, Orchard House, The Poplars, The Rookery or similar, else you'd have spotted it already Grin.

Why not be St Whatsit's House, St Whatsit's Road? Sounds like you own the place...

Am a big fan of Something House or The Something rather than a one-word random name. And nothing involving cute woodland animals - there's a Squirrellry near us, which is just silly.

go for 11A

names are unbearably naff IMHO

CountessDracula · 03/04/2006 12:12

There is a house near where my parents live called Kevin Grin I always pmsl at that

The new house we are buying has a number and a name and lots of people have said it is naff but it has been there etched on the glass since about 1890ish so am loathe to move it now.I agree with just 11a as any name does sound a bit dodgy Sorry

CountessDracula · 03/04/2006 12:15

What is wrong with no 13?

SoupDragon · 03/04/2006 12:15

Why 11a?? Just go with 13! It's only a number.

Twiglett · 03/04/2006 12:16

call it Kevin Grin .. kevin is post-naff Grin

noddyholder · 03/04/2006 12:17

Misread the post didn't see the bit about 13 Go with that then unless you secretly want a name a la Hyacinth BucketWink

CountessDracula · 03/04/2006 12:20

What is so naff about a name anyway? I agree dunrovin or whatever is naff but lots of houses have had names for years or aren't in a road that is obviously numbered.

NewLP · 03/04/2006 12:21

Silly I know, but I do feel a bit odd about the number 13 – I know it’s just a number and all that – I know it’s really the 7th house on that side of the street and if the council or who ever had started the numbers at the opposite end of the street it would be one hundred and something – It’s just a number – I keep telling myself that but…

Bakers Dozen.

Carmenere · 03/04/2006 12:21

If your house is in a street with other numbered houses, leave it as number 13 or 11a if you are supersticious. If your house is set alone from other houses by all means give it a name. Named houses on numbered streets are just naff - think Jack and Veras 'The Old Rectory' on Coronation Street. Of course you could always call it 'The Old Rectory' as homage to Jack and VeraGrin

Callisto · 03/04/2006 12:23

Can't see what is naff about house names - I have always lived in named not numbered houses. If a house doesn't have a number how else does the post get there?

cece · 03/04/2006 12:24

12 apostles?

how about Easter House or Judas????

Twiglett · 03/04/2006 12:24

carmenere is wise .. listen to carmenere

(nodding in agreement .. yet again)

NewLP · 03/04/2006 12:25

It’s a very nice 1920’s detached house – big rooms – high ceilings etc – but nothing really name worthy.
A few of the houses on the road have names as well as numbers – I think it was a 1920 –30’s thing.

cece · 03/04/2006 12:25

Like Bakers Dozen!

NewLP · 03/04/2006 12:26

Judas!!! Shock - 13 is much better thanks.

you could put something in for the name eg paint the door red and call it The Red House

Or paint the windows white and call it White Windows

Or plant a Yew Tree and call it Yew Tree House

Twiglett · 03/04/2006 12:27

call it "triskaidekaphobia"

or "triskaideka" for short
