Our phone (landline) has started making a hideous crackling noise. BT say that there's no fault on the line. Does anyone know what it could be? Do we just need a new phone?

Check the cable for kinks or loose connections. A big kink can cause the wire inside to get damaged.

it is probably not a digital phone, my old annolouge phone did this and Bt said landline was fine, so bought a digital cordless and never had crackling since!!!!

My brother was nicknamed the Taliban and spent 18 months in Afghanistan, so we probably are on some security person's radar somewhere!

More prosaically (if there is such a word) I suspect we probably just need to get a new phone. Ours is a digital cordless one though, and it's only about six years old.
