I was interested in this \link{http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/womanshour/2004_45_mon_05.shtml\Womans Hour item} about why some people like to wake up early and others prefer to wake up late and stay up late at night.

It's to do with cortisol, apparently, the hormone which wakes you up and gets you going. There's a whole spectrum between lark and owl depending when your cortisol peaks.

So what are you? I'm an owl. No matter how tired I've felt in the afternoon, and how I've longed to get into bed, I perk up again at about 9pm and wonder why others are flagging.

owl, always have been

expatinscotland · 23/03/2006 21:32

Owl. Most definitely. Always have been. Been an incurable insomniac most of my adult life as well.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 23/03/2006 21:33

Owl. Without a doubt.

lucy5 · 23/03/2006 21:33

beetroot · 23/03/2006 21:34

they're sad, spider. dd1 is turning into a lark - getting up at 7 these days, which is just crushing!

Hulababy · 23/03/2006 21:36

Definitely not a lark. I hate having to get up early, although 3 days a week I have to leave the house before 7am - biut it is under protest. I am more of an Owl I guess. I do tend to go to bed earlish but can read forever in bed.

spidermama · 23/03/2006 21:37

Yes I've been forced into the world of the lark by the arrival of children expat.

I can't read in bed because the baby's in there in the cot. I find that really hard. At bed time I have to sneak in with the light off. Huh! Soon time to put him in with his brothers I think.

Mercy · 23/03/2006 21:41

cod · 23/03/2006 21:42

lark lark lark

dha nd owl

FrayedKnot · 23/03/2006 21:42

I'm neither.

I peak around 10.30am and by 11 I'm pooped.

Hate mornings. Can't stay up past 10.30pm.

Perhaps you'd call me a dormouse?

myturn · 23/03/2006 21:43

And 2 of my dds are larks like me, the other 2 owls interestingly enough (or not)

expatinscotland · 23/03/2006 21:44

our whole family are owls. dd1 goes down at 8, but i can hear her chatting away to her cuddlies till about 9. dd2, a baby, goes down around 9 and wakes at 8.30.

let's hope the trend continues.

MummyPig · 23/03/2006 21:44

i'm an owl with a lark as a partner and two boys who will happily wake me up at 5 am and don't understand why I'm growling at everyone Angry have recently been trying to go to bed by 10pm but it's very hard work as it seems to be my best time to get anything done.

brimfull · 23/03/2006 21:45

Oxl,dh a lark

brimfull · 23/03/2006 21:45

what's an oxlBlush...OwL

crazydazy · 23/03/2006 21:49

I'm a bit of both as I like going to bed early but also love to stay in bed if I get the opportunity.

Lazy cow thats me.

Am not as bad as my sister though, when we lived at home on weekends I used to surface around 11 and sometimes she didn't surface until 4.00 in the afternoon. Shock

spidermama · 23/03/2006 21:54

I fear that the world is run by larks and they have the lionshare of the power. Why else would the majority of the workforce start at nine in the morning?

GDG · 23/03/2006 21:57

Lark

Dh an owl so works out ok with 'waking in the night' children and 'early riser' children - we can share equally!
I always got up mega early and did revising early for exams - could never stay up late (took pro plus once and it nearly killed me!). Also used to get into work much earlier than everyone else as it's my most productive time.

MrsSpoon · 23/03/2006 21:58

I'm an owl, always have been. DH is a lark but I think I have converted him a little to my owlish tendancies.
