DD has been invited to a birthday party by a boy in her class at school.

He will be 9 years old and they are a well off family.

I have no idea what 9 year old boys even like!

Help! Thanks

Geomag/Magnetix, science kit ( just sent off a basic electronics set for a friend's ds), outdoor toys like a foam rocket or ball which flattens to throw like a frizbe, a spherical jigsaw puzzle

If he's into football, he'd love anything about the World Cup (which is coming up this summer). There are some great books just out: try Fantastic Football by Clive Gifford (Oxford, #7.99) - comes with a World Cup chart! My ds1 also has another one all about the history of the world cup - can't remember what it's called but will go and dig it out, if you'd like to know...

Agree, football's a good idea. My 8.5 yo is into football, yu gi oh (trading cards), Star Wars and science stuff. There are some fab Science Museum type things around, like this \link{http://www.woolworths.co.uk/ww_p2/search/search.jhtml?disableGlobalFredHopper=true&_requestid=23538\blood thing} - that's prob more than you want to spend but you get the idea. The more gruesome the better for this age boy imo!

How about a book? I read 'Midnight for Charlie Bone' by Jenny Nimmo last year and enjoyed it.
It's a nice easy read with somewhat Harry Potterish story but less famous so he might not have a copy.

boys are the same, rich or poor. If it involves action and/or destruction, they will like it.
