Talking with a colleague we got round to washing (not sure how) and she revealed that she does several loads a day. One reason for this is that in her house, whenever anyone has a shower or bath, they get a clean towel, use it then drop it in the washing basket.
I was Shock at this. I change our towels once a week (everyone has their own for their exclusive use).
Quick poll round the office revealed that my colleague was excessive, but it was late and their were only 2 grungy men and a single woman so I felt I needed the guidance of MN-ers.
Sooooo - am I dirty? Or is my colleague a bit obsessive? Does anyone else do this?????

DS uses the same towel for a week. He only has a wee body and it's a big towel.
If I'm working, I have to shower at the end of a shift so I get 2 fresh towels each time. They go to works laundry to get washed.
At home, usually get a couple of days out of a towel. If I use it for drying hair, goes in the wash. I think I probably count in the nutter category. I blame my mum who has 2 cupboards full of towels and was a one use then wash kind of lady. Fresh soft towels are lovely though.

iota · 13/03/2006 15:39

mine are once a week, separate, colour-coded and we have a tumble dryer

desperateSCOUSEwife · 13/03/2006 15:39

i have a tumble drier,
and i dont think I am a nutter tbh for washing my towels after every use

Boopert · 13/03/2006 15:40

I have tumble dryer and rads....
And a cupboard FULL of bath sheets and normal sized and hair towels.....

Opps. Think i'm obsessed with buying towels....Blush

moondog · 13/03/2006 15:52

But whydsw??
It is a scandalous waste of energy!!

desperateSCOUSEwife · 13/03/2006 16:00

so is using a computer and other home comforts a scandalous waste of energy moondog
I cant see the problem with wanting to use a fresh towel tbh

Blackduck · 13/03/2006 16:02

Its not just electricity thou' Its water!! and bearing in mind they are threatening people with water meters, drought measures etc. it is scandalous...

desperateSCOUSEwife · 13/03/2006 16:03

blackduck well water companies get enough money out of us
should start repairing pipes etc instead of using ancient relics under the ground that leak

Blackduck · 13/03/2006 16:08

sorry dSW don't buy that - so there is repair work to be done, BUT we too have a duty to look at our use of resources. A ssomeone else pointed out - this is not a sustainable way of living..

desperateSCOUSEwife · 13/03/2006 16:14

blackduck you dont have to buy it at all
i pay for water and electric that I use, dont see what the problem is

Blackduck · 13/03/2006 16:17

You are obviously metered - not everyone is...perhapes if everyone was they would realise how much they actually ues...(never thought I'd actually advocate water metering!). BUT I still don't think that solves the issue. We are facing a water shortage and this needs to be addressed by all of us, not just the water companies...

Avalon · 13/03/2006 16:18

Water companies lose billions of litres every day through leaking pipes.

That's not just repair work, carelessness elevated to a fine art.

TinyGang · 13/03/2006 16:21

Flannels changed after every bath, towels about three/four times a week.

Damp, soggy used towels that are shared are a good way of passing about skin problems. I could allocate us each a towel but three young children tend to forget who's is who's in the bathroom scrum.

There are five of us and I think this is important; one dose of impetigo taught me thatSad.

desperateSCOUSEwife · 13/03/2006 16:21

and fatcats raking in profits
they have been sitting on their wiles for years and doing nothing about the leaking pipes
now there is a problem through their negligence, we are getting told to cut down etc
no way
it is the water companies fault not mine

Boopert · 13/03/2006 16:25

Well i use a lot of water in my house. Have to keep it clean. And i'm metered. I pay for what i use. How about those that leave taps running or leaky and can't be arsed to repair cos they don't have to pay for it.
Or those with indoor heated swimming pools??

MrsBadger · 13/03/2006 16:27

ah, that's fine then, because it's someone else's fault, none of us need do anything about it.

[wanders off to water garden liberally with hosepipe and bury head firmly in sand]

Boopert · 13/03/2006 16:29

No, but why should some of us be penalised when its something we have to do?? I can't let my ds and dh live in filth. And dirty towels = disease. Those who water their gardens daily and those with swimming pools obviously couldn't give a toss.
I'm not saying i don't because i do, but i have to use the water and with the money the companies charge surely it lies with them to repair? You would find a lot less water is wasted if they got off their behinds!

desperateSCOUSEwife · 13/03/2006 16:32

why are we paying out for recyling water plants then
surely if the water is recycled, where is it going
oh i remember the leaking pipes

Clary · 13/03/2006 16:39

actually I don't think we do have dirty towels, changing them once a week.
Especially because we each have our own.
(Tinygang, i forgot about impetigo!)
To be fair to my colleague, she did agree that perhaps she could cut down on her washing. She has a tumble drier too, otherwise she would have to have about 50 towels I reckon. But I mean. Imagine washing 35 towels a week. That has to be 7 loads a week just of towles. Is this really what you do DSW? (not trying to gang up on you, honest)

OP posts:
desperateSCOUSEwife · 13/03/2006 16:45

clary no i wash more than 35 towels a week
it has to be between 6 and 10 a day

Boopert · 13/03/2006 16:46

Not saying that you need to use soooo many towels but if they get dirty (my ds is always covered in mud, hence his bath every evening)they need washing.

desperateSCOUSEwife · 13/03/2006 16:47

I suppose I should be lugging my washing
barefoot
to the banks of the mersey
and beating it against a rock
coz I am such a wasteful personGrin

Boopert · 13/03/2006 16:48

You mean you haven't been???? Tsk Tsk Tsk.

desperateSCOUSEwife · 13/03/2006 16:49

no boopert, i am too bone idleGrin

Boopert · 13/03/2006 16:51

You really should be ashamed of yourself you water wasting.....WASTER! Grin
