DD has brought me some homework - I have to write about my favourite toy when I was little! So - first q - I had this plastic corrugated pipe thing that you swung around and it made great noises - did anyone else have one and did they have a name? second q - what was your favourite toy?

I know exactly what you mean- they became trendy just after clackers, or whatever they were called, but I can't think of the name. My favourite toy-- hmm, my dolls' house, I suppose (boring but true).

thewomanwhothoughtshewasahat · 09/03/2006 19:32

ooo yes I remember clackers. I also had this great thing which was a plastic hoop, with a piece of string attached and a heavy rubber ball thing at the end. You put the hoop over one leg then swung it round, jumping over the string with your other leg

A wooden jigsaw of a giraffe, the ones that stand up - it was chewable and throwable, yeah baby!

hellsbellsdownunder · 09/03/2006 19:36

A golliwog called Mair!!!!Blush and my teddy called Billy.

tamum · 09/03/2006 19:36

Oh yes, I loved my one of those, it was fluorescent green I think. I used to do it for hours. I bought dd one but it doesn't seem to work as well.

tamum · 09/03/2006 19:37

(N.B. I was referring to thewomanwhothoughtshewasahat's post about the plastic hoop thing, I didn't have a fluorescent green teddy)

zippitippitoes · 09/03/2006 19:39

tamum · 09/03/2006 19:42

I think groan tubes are rigid, though, aren't they? The ones I think thewomanetc means are much bigger and flexible, almost concertina-like, but long (boy am I useless at describing things like this).

RedRidingHood · 09/03/2006 19:44

I had Sindy and I loved playing with lego.

My dd has a Golly - got it via her grandpa who bought it from the shop in the news!

treacletart · 09/03/2006 19:44

OOOOOO000000oooooooh yes! I loved mine. It was bright yellow and I think I just called it a whirly tube. I was given it in 1970 when I was 3, I think it was bought from a man at Tottenham Court Rd Station. I wasn't allowed to play with it indoors. I remember taking it to Hyde Park and having to wait for my Mum to tell me when I'd be allowed to start whirling it around. Weird! I'd forgotten all about it till your post but its just brought back some really vivid memories

Fauve · 09/03/2006 19:47

My dd's got one of those flexible tube things. Did anyone have a Julep horse? (glam model horse with v long mane, still available for an arm and a leg) We were SO POOR we could only have a little Julep hound each. I liked stilts, too. And the swing.

Northerner · 09/03/2006 19:50

I loved my fashion wheel design thingy, and I had a small white piano thing with silver keys but it had a pen attached to play the music with, can't remember what it's called. Think Rolf Harris advertised it. What was it called?

cyan · 09/03/2006 19:53

a talking teddy ruckspin or whatever it was called

zippitippitoes · 09/03/2006 19:53

in my catalogue a groan tube is rigid the flexi one is..

musical twirling pipe

so obviously had a real name like slinky did

tamum · 09/03/2006 20:11

Hurrah, thank you zippi :)

Fauve, I would have killed for a Julep horse. Or even a hound. Well, maybe not. My best friend had loads Envy

thewomanwhothoughtshewasahat · 09/03/2006 20:32

I had one of those wind up monkeys - mine played the drum. My other favourites were some string puppets - we had Noddy, Big Ears and Florence from the Magic Roundabout. Does anyone remember Doodle Art? They were great. I'll never forget one Christmas my mum bought fake Doodle Arts for me to give as Christmas presents (we were skint) I was mortified. How horrid children can be!

Sindys!

crazydazy · 09/03/2006 20:46

I loved Sindy's too, I had about 10 and my sister had about 8 and we used to play "schools" with them.

The toy I most wanted to own but mum could never afford was "Simon", the one with the flashing lights, but it was too expensive. DP had one Angry

BettySpaghetti · 09/03/2006 20:47

Just remembered another -Etch-a-sketch

thewomanwhothoughtshewasahat · 09/03/2006 20:49

I wanted a Simon but my friend got one and it turned out to be pretty crap to be honest. I got a Merlin which was quite good. But probably only kept me amused until mid January

We saw an Etch a Sketch in Toys R Us the other day, it was exactly the same!! DP and I got quite excited and showed it to DD, within 30 seconds it was put back on the shelf in distaste Grin

I loved Atari too.
