\link{http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/TINKERBELL-REBORN-Baby-NEW-SCULPT-Berenguer-preemie_W0QQitemZ5672674672QQcmdZViewItem\ think its very creepy}

OP posts:

Hmmm. I think that's a bit harsh though, as long as you haven't been in a situation like this how do you know what might help you cope with such an awful situation? And people deal with grief in different ways...

NomDePlume · 09/03/2006 09:55

Emkana, I have been in that situation (lost a DD at 24 weeks, had to deliver her naturally at 26 weeks). This dol would NOT have helped me, surely it would be more likely to act as an object to fixate over, rather than aid your recovery ?

oliveoil · 09/03/2006 09:57

Very talented artist

But I am thinking weird

bakedpotato · 09/03/2006 09:58

Not exactly to my taste, but reminds me of \link{http://images.google.co.uk/imgres?imgurl=vassun.vassar.edu/~jamundy/DeadDadL.jpg&imgrefurl=vassun.vassar.edu/~jamundy/DeadDad.html&h=421&w=537&sz=52&tbnid=641e128qwCoZWM:&tbnh=101&tbnw=129&hl=en&start=1&prev=/images%3Fq%3Ddead%2Bdad,%2Bron%26svnum%3D10%26hl%3Den%26lr%3D%26ie%3DUTF-8%26sa%3DG\Ron Mueck's Dead Dad}
Or is one art and one tasteless tat?

NomDePlume · 09/03/2006 09:59

ewwww, bakedpotato

emkana · 09/03/2006 10:00

I'm very sorry, NdP, I didn't realize that.

But as I say, people deal with grief in different ways, so there might just be some people who would find it helpful.

alexsmum · 09/03/2006 10:01

that is so weird and creepy.makes me shudder.

pashmina · 09/03/2006 10:01

not sure either is art, but the baby thing is tasteless tat

NomDePlume · 09/03/2006 10:03

emkana, I know what you mean about grieving in different ways, but I feel that in the majority of cases it would be an unhealthy thing to give a newly bereaved parent.

The connotations of the name 'Reborn' gives me the creeps too.

cod · 09/03/2006 10:03

ndp thast sad

i never knew that

alexsmum · 09/03/2006 10:06

baked potato-yuck!

NomDePlume · 09/03/2006 10:07

s'ok, have spoken about it before on MN. It was 7 years ago, with a different partner

OMG ! have just found this. \link{http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/DAISY-A-LOVELY-REBORN-BABY-CHOU-CHOU-DOLL_W0QQitemZ5673418803QQcategoryZ122723QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem\HOLY COW ! Imagine looking into a pram and seeing that !}

suzywong · 09/03/2006 10:12

right, call the rozzers buecause that thing has been painted "inside and out"
WTF????????

alexsmum · 09/03/2006 10:12

rofl!!! that's just bloody tiny tears with some blusher on!
what are these people on???

pashmina · 09/03/2006 10:13

had no idea people spent time making things like that!! witha baby chou chou - some people have too much time on theit hands!

NotQuiteCockney · 09/03/2006 10:14

That one's particularly creepy, NDP.

I like the Dead Dad. I've seen it in real life, I think at the Saatchi gallery?

I think zippitippitoes is right, btw, it's a crafters sort of thing. There are lots of sites out there where you can buy the plain dolls, the paints, the hair, the pellets.

wabbitintheheadlamps · 09/03/2006 10:15

OMG - NDP that's hideous!

Sorry I don't think I'm creepy but have come round to the idea of 'baby abigail' just as a pretty doll - I'd lose the dummy though! My dd thought it was lovely and wanted me to put a bid in... until she saw how much it was going for! Shock

NomDePlume · 09/03/2006 10:16

'daisy' is obviously someones first bargain basement foray into the world of Reborn 'artistry'. She looks so bizarre next to the oh so lifelike dolls on the listings page

NomDePlume · 09/03/2006 10:17

That one I linked to outs me in mind of Chucky from the Child's Play movies.

Kelly1978 · 09/03/2006 10:17

Ive seent hese before, it is a big american thing, like someone said - card making to the nth degree. They start out with a normal doll, and replace the eyes and everything and paint it to make it as lifelike as possible. Then sellt hem to collectors. I think they are vile, but then I think most dolls are vile. Each to their own.

Kelly1978 · 09/03/2006 10:18

you used to be able to get the new eyes and stuff on ebay.

alexsmum · 09/03/2006 10:18

the annabel has 'real hair eyelashes'
oh it makes my flesh crawl

NomDePlume · 09/03/2006 10:27

If DH found one of these doll kits in our house he'd be HORRIFIED. It all comes across as a bit morbid, to me.

FrannyandZooey · 09/03/2006 11:18

Yes I would not have necessarily called myself 'sick' or 'creepy'. Not on a good day, anyway :o

I think they are very interesting. I am fascinated by how they get them to look so real. I am always at a loss as to why people react so strongly to them - do you find models of other things upset you as well? It's normal to like looking at and touching babies - this looks and feels like a real baby - what's the problem with some people wanting to look at them?

I think the prices they command, and the whole ethos of it is weird, but the dolls themselves look wonderful to me.

paolosgirl · 09/03/2006 11:21

Each to their own, I guess, but what on earth would you do with a £410 doll - and where would you put it? Would you make up a lace-covered crib and put it in there?!!
