Oh no, too, too creepy for words.

soapbox · 08/03/2006 23:37

'Pair of front and back anatomically correct posing plates' What are these then????

soapbox · 08/03/2006 23:38

Pruni - sorry crossed posts!

No I can't see how myself - different strokes and all that:)

I think I would have been totally bereft without children and a fake one would have been a constant reminder of what I was missing out on:(

SuperTramp · 08/03/2006 23:41

Maybe it would help for someone who'd just lost a newborn to hold it and care for it. They do seem to have an air of death about them which is what I find a bit eerie.

I think the posing plates are so you can place the doll on it's front or back and it looks like how a natural baby would lay.

ghosty · 08/03/2006 23:43

It has my DD's name .... think I am going to throw up [vomit emoticon]

Mind you, at least it won't keep you awake at night, won't have given you stretch marks, won't make you nips hurt etc etc ... hmmmmmmmm ..... perhaps ....

But then again .... perhaps NOT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

handlemecarefully · 08/03/2006 23:56

It's a bit odd, but doesn't provoke a strong reaction in me. Live and let live and all that...

Pixel · 08/03/2006 23:58

I wouldn't actually want one, but I am impressed by how clever it is. How on earth do they make them so lifelike? I don't find it nearly as creepy as those stuffed cats that are apparently made out of real cat fur (according to my sister who works at a vets).

I saw an article a couple of weeks ago about using this kind of 'artistry' to help people who are seriously disfigured. One young woman had part of her face missing and they made her a false piece including the eye. It was amazing, it just looked like her real face. Someone else had no ears and he had some that he could attach to magnets implanted under his skin. Most people wouldn't be able to tell they weren't his real ears and he could swim in them and everything.

It's only because it's a baby you're all going 'eurgh'. There have always been people (a bit sad obv!) who enjoy collecting dolls. They've just never been so lifelike before, that's all. (The dolls, not the people! although you have to wonder...).

wabbitintheheadlamps · 09/03/2006 00:50

Pixel - a local gift store where I used to live had those cats in.... we complained to the owner and they stopped stocking them - Yes it was real cat fur Sad

I wonder how long you could go to Bumps and Babies with this doll before anyone noticed that it wasn't real!!! Grin

It's very clever and the sort of thing I would have wanted badly when I was a little girl - so real, I'm not creeped out by it, just a bit flummoxed

NotQuiteCockney · 09/03/2006 06:53

There are way too many of these out there for it all to be about infertility and so on. In my opinion.

Also, they are freaky and weird.

There have been a few discussions about these before, oddly enough no MN person has been brave enough to say "oh, yes, I love those, I have three".

FrannyandZooey · 09/03/2006 07:38

I haven't got one, but I can see why people like them. If you had lost a baby I can absolutely see why you might want one. I think they are very clever, too. I would love to look at one to see how they make them so real. I don't think it is any weirder than, say, people calling their animals with human names and buying them special clothes / bedding / toys etc. The instinct to have something small to care for and love is very strong, and can sometimes get mis-directed, just like our sex drives can. I think it's harmless.

harpsichordcarrier · 09/03/2006 07:42

it's weird, because though I know they aren't real, I react emotionally to those pictures as if they were real. I feel protective and aa bit "aaah!" iyswim.
So I can imagine that it might be emotionally satisfying to hold one.

FrannyandZooey · 09/03/2006 07:47

Yes to be totally honest if they were giving them out free I would have one. There is something deeply emotionally satisfying about holding a small, soft weight that just fits into your arm just so....I think it would give comfort. And I think it comes down yet again to that thing of us being uncomfortable about people over a certain age giving themselves comfort except in socially accepted ways (drink, sex, etc)

harpsichordcarrier · 09/03/2006 07:53

and look at it this way
it def cheaper than getting pregnant again Shock

zippitippitoes · 09/03/2006 08:03

looks awful with that oversized dummy in, though...

noddyholder · 09/03/2006 08:03

That is hideous what on earth good reason would anyone have for it which only leaves sickos tbh.I have never seen anything so real looking

harpsichordcarrier · 09/03/2006 08:06

yes the dummy looks weird that's for sure

Sparklemagic · 09/03/2006 08:32

Bleurrgghhhhhhh.

ruthydd · 09/03/2006 08:38

Does it cry at 1am, 3am, 4.30am, 5am & 7am ? If not then I definitely want one ....thanks for the link!

Would anyone like to buy my 2 real boys ? 3.5yrs and 6 months ?

hunkermunker · 09/03/2006 08:55

OK, they really upset me. That's really strange.

suzywong · 09/03/2006 08:55

"body is filled with a combination of "baby fat" pellets

it's very very sad isn't it, clearly for the recently bereived. I hope and not some low life paedo ring

zippitippitoes · 09/03/2006 08:58

I thought they were for doll collectors

of which there are millions, especially in the US

it's also a competitve thing amongst doll makers

sort of card making to the nth degree!

winnie · 09/03/2006 09:17

yuk... that is weird

pashmina · 09/03/2006 09:48

couldn't quite believe that, has left me wondering - why? it seems a bit sick??

NomDePlume · 09/03/2006 09:49

No, those reborns are for creepy folk. The sort of spinsters that hang around labour wards looking for babies to steal.

NomDePlume · 09/03/2006 09:51

And as for the 'recently bereaved' argument. I see no way in which these things would be helpful in getting a mother/father over the loss of their tiny baby.
