anyone got marble worktops?

We are looking at new kitchens. I did all my worktop research and had rejected marble on grounds that it's porous, stains etc., but oh....

today saw such a bargain!

lush marmaladey coloured marble worktops surrounding groovy Franke sink JUST THE RIGHT SIZE for our kitchen..... ex display at £350.00!!!

but how annoying really are marble worktops?

we've got to get it, haven't we???

We have a marble dining table. It is black with white "marbling" so no stains! It does need regular dusting & polishing - shows up more quickly than a wooden table, but is sooo easy to clean. It is VERY heavy though!

I would have thought marble work-tops would be fine.

I'd get it, we paid a small fortune for our "all singing all dancing " Corian worktop and have to say I'm really disappointed with it.

DONT DO IT!

you really do have to wipe up spills immediately or it stains. oil looks particlarly horrible. We had one once in a rented house and I would never buy one even if I didn't have kids. I'd rather buy a white suede settee - at least you can patch those. (oh, ok then, a red wine coloured suede settee)

Do you mean marble or granite?

I haven't heard of marble but we have granite and is great

I mean I have heard of marble obviously but not as a worktop!

actually I think ours was granite - red granite. but I know marble stains because we have marble floors.

does yours not stain, cd or are you really clean and organised?

Oh nooooo SP, that was not what I wanted to hear! What colour were your rented-house worktops? I do know they stain, but am hoping that with the veining of the marble we might get away witht he odd blotch... Anyway, £350???? Even the sink alone is worth a good £500...

granite certainly is less porous than marble, and you don't ahev to seal it.... do you have to seal marble?

I have marble in the kitchen and bathrooms. It does stain very eaily.Ours is now darker so it doesn't show up so much but in our last house it was very light and it constantly looked like the surfaces were dirty.

I'd second granite. Cost a lot but can put things on it straight from hob/oven and no need for a chopping board. No experience of marble though I'm afraid.

spots - it was red, well, sort of splodgy red and brown/black. It looked really nice until I didn't notice that I'd left an oily spoon next to the sink...

It was also "sealed" btw.

argh... thanks everyone... temptation may get the better of me on the cost front (and the sink front) but will have your words ringing in my ears. 'beans or gold?' as dh would say.
