Im so furious about this and upset as i had my 18 month dd with me at the time.
basically was queing in a shop in town this morning, came my turn to pay, so i walked down the other end to pack my shopping, turned round and this man (approx age early seventies) wandered through past the till and stood there behind me!!, his wife also walked through and stood to the left of me and as i was about to key in my pin number, so i turned to this man and asked him politely to move back, which was ignored, so i had to key in my number with him stood right behind me.
after id done that, as i took my receipt i turned and said"i thought you were going to pay for my sbopping"(in a sarcastic voice), he just glared at me, so i said" its very intimidating when people stand behind you when you are paying, you should keep back off the till", his wife retorted, "oh shove off you silly woman!!" and he shouted at me, "oh why dont you just F$^^k off!!!!!" i was flabbergasted, but managed to quip back"oh, foul mouthed as well as ignorant", i was physically shaking when i walked out of there, to make matters worse, the checkout operator shouted after me"oi whats youyr problem!!"

what people give they get back. Horrid Horrid man, but as my mum would have said "not worth wiping the sh*t off your shoe on" Yes it's rude, but hold your head high and know you're better and you're children will be brought up correctly!

Please don't waste any more of your time on him.

milward · 06/03/2006 13:08

What an awful couple spacecadet - plus how awful to use bad language in front of your kid. You're quite right - foul mouthed & ignorant.

FairyMum · 06/03/2006 13:08

I thought you dealt with it very well. How rude.
Can't believe the checkout person shouted at you. I would complain. Surely they should make sure people can pay in private.

Was it in ASDA or Waitrose? He he

suzywong · 06/03/2006 13:09

kudos for using quip as a verb, spacecadet

I always used to say an pointed "excuse me" , to old bastards lke that who stood right by the pin number thing. There is a lot more etiquette here

Nasty pair of old gits

VeniVidiVickiQV · 06/03/2006 13:10

Oh, dont worry SC - if thats how they treat people they'll be living out their days lonely and miserable.

I had that once at a checkout with a couple (younger though). He kept shoving his trolley in my back.

Unfortunately my response was "Stop shoving that Fcking trolley in my back you fcking ignoramus"

tissy · 06/03/2006 13:11

too late now, I know, but if it happens again, refuse to put in your PIN number until you have privacy. I would complain to the shop manager that not only did the checkout operator fail to ensure that you could use the keypad unobserved, he was also abusive to you as well.

beetroot · 06/03/2006 13:12

Shock and Shock at check out operator. She should be reprimanded

sparklymieow · 06/03/2006 13:12

Shock at the checkout person!! report them and forget about the rude old man

staceym11 · 06/03/2006 13:13

i cant stand ignorant people, people seem to have the view old people are nice, i have absolutely no idea where they get that idea from.

had an experience with an elderly lady as dd was kicking and screaming on the street ( dd is 16 month old and doesnt like the word no) so i left her to it and walked about 2 mtrs for her to get up and follow. the woman shouted from across the road 'don't FKING leave that child on her own, if you can't handle her you shouldnt have had a child in the first place, you Fking teenage mothers (im 19) i was gobsmacked but managed to say ' how dare you, i havnt left her, shes not coming to any harm, shes just having a tantrum, and it would be better if you didnt swear around young children acctually' and then she went off on one that her kids never had tantrums and how she can swear as much as she likes babies dont understand anyway!!!!!

i just dont understand i really dont!!!

but dont worry about it, their problem really not yours!

Enid · 06/03/2006 13:13

I'd have been cross with the checkout operator too and gone back and told them all to feck off.

I wish - no not really, wouldnt have the balls.

Remember, what goes around comes around.

Old men are the worst (we have lots of ranty shouty ones here at work)

Twinkie1 · 06/03/2006 13:14

OOoooooo old people think they have a bloody right to be rude!! Like the old cow who was using a cheese grater type thing on her manky feet in the changing rooms at the gym the other night - she told me to F off when I asked her to stop and I just shouted even louder that people don;t have a right to be rude just cause they old and wrinkly and no I didn't want to stand in her manky cruddy hard foot fillings!! Bleugh!!!

Ignore them or shout really loud but don;t let them get to you!!!

beetroot · 06/03/2006 13:14

a taxi driver gave dd (6) the finger yeaterday Shock

bunny3 · 06/03/2006 13:15

i often find old people to be rude and grumpy - hence my general sislike. Last time I met one I replied to his rude comment "drop dead you old sod". Id def moan to the shop though about the cashier.

bunny3 · 06/03/2006 13:16

Shock beetroot - hope you contacted the company for a good moan

georginars · 06/03/2006 13:18

goodness how rude - I can't bear it when people crowd you at the checkout. Apart from the fact you're supposed to shield your number, it's just so rude and an invasion of your personal space. Well done for managing to say something though - much better than spending the rest of the day thinking of what you should have said.

I always get the shakes when something like this happens to me as well - it's a horrible feeling. have a cup of tea with sugar and a sit down. It makes everyday life so unpleasant when people are like this.

agree you should complain about the checkout person - that's unacceptable.

beetroot · 06/03/2006 13:18

i dint see it. she had scootered ahead of me and was waiting at the crossing around the corner. She pressed the button, but as I was not htere, waited until I arrived. taxi driver must have thought she was pissing around and gave her the finger.

sparklymieow · 06/03/2006 13:18

one day I was working on the checkouts, and politely told this woman she couldn't use the vouchers she had given me because it was a safeway one and she hadn't brought the item, she started ranting and raving at me, wanting my name and operator number, and was going to report me to headoffice!!! In the end I walked off the till. Some people are so rude

threelittlebabies · 06/03/2006 13:24

Shock at the checkout assistant, but pmsl at all your pithy comebacks! Hope you're ok spacecadet. On Sat at 10.30pm our phone rang. I leapt to answer it so it didn't wake the kids, and it was an old lady enquiring of her friend had got home ok. After politely explaining THREE times that she had the wrong no, she tutted and put the phone down without so much as a "sorry"!!!

nailpolish · 06/03/2006 13:27

i always stand way back at the till til the person in front of me has finished and begun to walk away - its only bloody manners after all. but if there is a person behind me they are shoving and telling me to "move ahead"

its not going to move quicker if i move ahead

more times than i remember ive snipped at the person behind me that "im waiting til the person before me has finished ill move ahead when im READY"

SIGH

lifes full of double standards

spacey, if you have time i would write 2 letters - one to the local paper, about privacy for PIN punching, and one to the shop complaining about the checkout operator

keep copies

follow with a phone call

ill bet they send you some vouchers

whatever they offer you, tell them you want double or youre not coming back to the shop

my FIL does it all the time

Angeliz · 06/03/2006 13:27

Oh i HATE it when people do that.
I pack reeeaaalllllllllllllllyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyyy slowly and always lose my card!!!
Ignorant pigs!

spacecadet · 06/03/2006 13:35

now ive calmed down a little, i have decided that im def going to complain about the checkout operator, it was in wilkinsons and where they have the chip and pin pads is actually right down at the bottom where you pack your bags, thats how far through this man had stood, i should have handed him a carrier bag and told him to pack my shopping..Angry
oh and beetroot complain about the taxi driver, what a vile man.

spacecadet · 06/03/2006 13:46

lars · 06/03/2006 13:48

spacecadet, That's was awful for you. I feel exactly the same as you when people come up behind you and not give you the required space needed. I t's highly rude and I'm afraid to say it but it has been the elderly folk who tend to do this. My mother has this happen on the post office and my mum asked the clerk to tell the customer to move back, which they did.

I would complain to the manager and asked that your security of your details are your concern and that the operator kindly tell teh gentlement to step back when making your payment asked if they have a sign to tell the cutomer where to wait, esecially if they are that thick.

Not only that you are told to watch out for people looking over your should a cash machines. Why should this apply in the supermarket for chip and pin. larsxx

moondog · 06/03/2006 13:50

Silly arse, and sure as hell no 'gentleman'!

spacecadet · 06/03/2006 13:51

lars- i know, that gentleman could have easily read my pin number, so it wasnt secure at all, checkout operators should tell customers to wait in stead of saying nothing, if you go in a large bank or post office, you have "wait here" signs to give people privacy, they should do the same on tills.
