Who does the ironing in your house?

Spent most of yesterday evening behind a huge pile of ironing while DH watched telly. Never went near the ironing board before children, now I'm never away from it... help! I even iron vests, though not knickers (I'm not insane). Who irons and what do you iron?

My dh does most of the ironing, but we tend to hang the clothes unironed, and just iron as we need them. Most of dd's school clothes don't need ironing, just hanging up straight from the tumble drier, and I wouldn't iron vests if you paid me! Can't see the point.

I never iron DS's clothes, except smart shirts, or if I am sending it all to sell at the Nearly new Sale!!

crazydazy · 06/03/2006 11:42

DP's Mum has always done the ironing even socks and pants and DP EXPECTS me to do it. I know he can do it himself and tbh he does a better job but expects me to do as part of the household chores. I just do it, it doesn't bother me, he brings a good wage and so I am happy with that.

Amelily · 06/03/2006 11:42

Wish I'd never started this!! Just curious to know where other people draw the line with ironing... I shared a house at university with women who ironed EVERYTHING. (Tumble drier seems to make things more creased.)

thankyou CD, I'm hoping my brain will engage one day soon.

(it was very nearly my brian I hoped would engage!!)

jessicaandrebeccasmummy · 06/03/2006 11:42

DH irons once a week - but only things that need ironed.

I dont go near the thing!

cod · 06/03/2006 11:43

i like to iron and make clothes look nice

nailpolish · 06/03/2006 11:45

ironing makes clothes look their best, whats the point of buying nice clothes if they are worn crumpled

i do the ironing and no-one else, im quite anal about it

Gloworm · 06/03/2006 11:45

We dont iron anything. They dry outside on the clothesline and dont really need ironong when they come in.
I dont think our clothes look creased, or look any different to those who iron everthing(my mum is the iron-everything-including-knickers-and-hankies-variety Grin )
Only exception would be if we need something dressy for a wedding etc that hadnt been worn in ages and was creased.

mumfor1standfinaltime · 06/03/2006 11:46

I only iron something when I need to wear it. Dh irons his own clothes when he needs them.
I used to iron everything and put it away, gave this up when clothes got creased after being put away and then getting re-ironed!

Do not iron sheets, bed linen, undies, or any of ds clothes - whats the point!

cod · 06/03/2006 11:46

i like my boys to have ironed cotton polo shorts ast school and as an Ex techer i cna tlel you that it DOES make a difference

zippitippitoes · 06/03/2006 11:47

Gloworm you put it beter than me

JackieNo · 06/03/2006 11:47

Not much gets ironed in our house, but what little does get done, is done by the cleaners Blush.

crazydazy · 06/03/2006 11:48

I too like clothes to look nice, I even use Vaporesse to make them smell nice too.

Feistybird · 06/03/2006 11:48

DP does it whilst watching sport on TV.

nailpolish · 06/03/2006 11:49

mumfor1st - how can you be arsed getting out the ironing board and iron for 1 thing? esp if you are running late for work/night out, whatever?

just do it in front of corrie twice a week

Amelily · 06/03/2006 11:50

Never use fabric conditioner either. Does that make me an unfit mother? (Or just a smelly one?) Though, in my defence, we have a septic tank (not on mains water or sewage) so have to be careful.

OP posts:
nailpolish · 06/03/2006 11:51

dont use fabric conditioner here either

horrid stuff

PandaG · 06/03/2006 11:53

I iron my stuff and the kids', DH does his own shirts. I ironed his work shirts once a few weeks after we got married, he didn't like the way I did it (I iron a crease down the top of a sleeve but his mum had taught him not to) so I said ok then, you can do your own ironing from now on! I only did it in the first place as he had started his job and I hadn't! 12 years later he wishes he had kept his mouth shut Wink

mumfor1standfinaltime · 06/03/2006 11:54

Most things dont need ironing much, I hang them up in the house to dry straight from the machine. (have no outside space to dry clothes, only a drive way)
ironed the legs on my jeans today!

I used to iron infront of the soaps, but I get fed up with ironing everything and then getting it out to wear it and its creased again from the wardrobe. Think I need to have a good tidy up in the wardrobe..hmm must do that this week..

Dh irons his shirt for work every morning, we arent late because of it.

noddyholder · 06/03/2006 11:54

No one just iron certain things but I hate the look of all ironed clothes. Can I just ask Cod what possible difference an ironed polo has on kids at school? If the iron is out I'll iron the odd bits but generally we are elegantly crumpled!

crazydazy · 06/03/2006 11:54

I love fabric conditioner, it makes your clothes smell lovely, cannot imagine not using it. I love the new Lenor pink, I always buy the concentrated one and seem to go through a bottle a week!!!
