I agree with Twinkie. You were probably hoping for too much when you devised this arrangement, if your mum is a martyr this was bound to happen.

It sounds like she is as unhappy with things as you are, so maybe she will welcome it if you suggest a change.

COuld you get her to help for a couple of days in the week and then get alternative help for the remaining days.
perhaps ask her to babysit more ( where perhaps ) you can pay over the odds a bit more - using the excuse of antisocial hours ...

Even if you only go round the corner to let off steam

I have a similar problem. I see my mum an awful lot and although I love her and she is a great help with my son (and she does cleaning and bits and pieces) sometimes I feel like you said - we just see too much of each other.
I find as well with your mum - if you snap and upset her you feel much worse than if you did that to anyone else! I think all you can do - short of talking to her a bout it which like you said cause of the money issue is not a good idea do like you did today. Log on have a good old rant - get it off your chest and you will feel better. Also you can say on here what you cant say to her face. it is sort of the same as when you have a diary. good luck! and if you want let me know and I will give you my e-mail address and we can moan to each other!!
PS: Sorry to hear about dad ()
