I feel uncomfortable using Elasoplast on a patient with black skin.

Is it racist ?

I get clear ones cos the 'white' ones are way off my skin colour. And fabric ones go soggy.

crazynanna · 29/06/2012 00:03

I remember aged 17 arguing with then BF in the club, I slammed down by glass of lager onto the table to flounce out, and the glass smashed and cut my thumb quite bad.

Went to local shop at 12.30 pissed as a fart, no plasters in stock (black or flesh), so bought a reel of selotape and sat at the bus stop selotaping this cut...ripping selotape with my teeth.

Two young lads were standing there looking like Shock

The only plasters in our house have bloody peppa pig on them...
Perhaps these should be the standard design/ colours. DD would love that!

AnyFuleKno · 29/06/2012 00:06

"What colour they are in Asia " actually sounds a bit racist just so you know

recall · 29/06/2012 00:06

mrsapplepants YES !!! that is the solution !!!

It would loose them money to stock them where I live now. It would not loose t
Hem money to stock then in tower hamlets where I used to live. So where's the argument? They do not have a universal obligation to sell them, just makes business sense to sell them where there are people to buy them, right?

recall · 29/06/2012 00:07

*Anyfulekno" how ?

OP posts:
saladcravings · 29/06/2012 00:07

Only if you read it that way, any! We're talking plasters, not people!

LadyWellian · 29/06/2012 00:08

OK: all plasters should be clear, with the pads in stripes of brown and cream.

AnyFuleKno · 29/06/2012 00:08

Oh right salad, sorry!

LadyWellian · 29/06/2012 00:08

Arse, I do know how to spell gavel but was having trouble with the

NoComet · 29/06/2012 00:09

I think it is racist to assume everyone is pale skinned, even if no healthy person of any race is Elastoplast pink. My Dad when he's been in the sun comes close.

But I'm not sure what you do about it, there are far too many skin colours for our tiny Boots to stock that many types and almost no ethnic minorities to buy them., here.

Hospitals and minor injury units could keep a few different ones or only use non skin colours.

Our hospital has 10+ colours of cast bandage, most utterly tasteless.

Make up is defiantly better and Marks sell nude bras in several shades of brown, at least on the web.

I don't know if plasters are sold in different colours on the web.

recall · 29/06/2012 00:09

I think Mr Men ones should be the universal ones

saladcravings · 29/06/2012 00:12

Boots don't sell dif colours online, just checked. But the do have yellow sponge bob ones if you like? And spray on plaster - never heard of that!

crazynanna · 29/06/2012 00:12
Grin

regret it now. You wanna see the 2 inch scar on my thumb Hmm

saladcravings · 29/06/2012 00:12

Yay agree the nhs should provide dif colours. Or just clear ones.

HolyCameraConfusionBatman · 29/06/2012 00:13

I think they should be different colours for different sizes as well. So the smallest ones maybe red, then the next size up orange, then yellow and so on. Then when you hurt yourself you can describe your injury in terms of the colour.

saladcravings · 29/06/2012 00:13

I wonder if the fabric ones are better for the environment tho?

recall · 29/06/2012 00:24

saladcravings those spray on plasters sting like fuck

OP posts:
recall · 29/06/2012 00:25

I sprayed it on my DD once and she hit the roof, then I used it on myself and felt really guilty

Good post recall.

I work in the NHS and all our splinting materials are cream. I have been asked several times by patients if there is a different colour that is closer to their skin tone and I just have to apologise and explain that no, even in 2012 it only comes in cream. Hmm

trixymalixy · 29/06/2012 00:35

Interesting. I was just thinking about bras the other day and wondering whether you could buy them to match different skin tones, as I saw a black woman wearing a "nude" coloured bra that didn't match her skin tone and therefore was a bit pointless.

fireice · 29/06/2012 00:37

My nude bras dont really match my skin tone either, and I have pretty average white skin (eg not very pale or very olive).

Want2bSupermum · 29/06/2012 00:40

I thought the reason that bandages were white/cream was so you could see the blood. Plasters don't blend in with my skin colour and it has never bothered me. I don't expect the NHS to start carrying different colours of plasters so they don't 'appear' racist. That is a waste of taxpayers money. I might also add that a very dark plaster wouldn't show blood.

What I would like is for all plasters to be the ones that are not superglued to your skin and give you a plaster wax when you whip them off.
