I feel uncomfortable using Elasoplast on a patient with black skin.

Is it racist ?

but you can only make clear ones in that plasticky stuff. i prefer a fabric plaster myself.

LadyWellian · 28/06/2012 23:52

HolyCamera yes they do and I did think about that while I was posting. But I am no more white than a black person is black.

yellowraincoat · 28/06/2012 23:52

They should make fabric ones yellow or blue or something.

AnyFuleKno · 28/06/2012 23:53

Ps if you are offended by the term dark forces I suggest not watching star wars, you'd have a shit fit

But seriously I agree, it is crap that default colour of 'nude' anything is this colour that no human bar Amy Childs actually matches.

saladcravings · 28/06/2012 23:54

It is the most common in the uk though... if that's what you mean by 'norm'?
I would feel a lot more concerned if they are selling 'white' plasters on,y in countries where most people are black. That would be racist. And stocking 'black' plasters in London and some other areas again makes sense, and presumably would make money. Because there being white is not 'the norm'.

recall · 28/06/2012 23:54

I would be interested to hear from a black person if they have ever been pissed off at having had an elastoplast applied...

recall I haven't read them yet but they will be next on my list once I have finished struggling (actually far less a struggle than I was expecting) with Joseph Conrad's The Secret Agent. Now there's an interesting look at social norms. Grin

thisisyesterday · 28/06/2012 23:54

i think it's fair enough to make them in skin tones, so they don't stand out too much.
but they need to do a variety of skin tones to cater for everyone.

clearly it's not going to be something that's ever goign to match everyone, but they could make a little bit of effort couldn't they?

recall · 28/06/2012 23:55

London and some other areas ???? WTF ??

OP posts:
yellowraincoat · 28/06/2012 23:55

There is most common and there is the norm.

It is not ok to only cater to the most common race/sex/level of ability and pretend that everyone else outside that doesn't exist.

recall · 28/06/2012 23:57

London and Aisia and Africa and US and Europe and Ausralasia ?? that would be a start..

OP posts:
saladcravings · 28/06/2012 23:57

Thisiayesterday, they will only make the effort if it will make them money - they're not going to make 100 dif shades (or even 3 shades!) if 87% of potential customers will only ever buy one shade!

thisisyesterday · 28/06/2012 23:57

companies do this all the time. I have several sainsburys supermarkets near me, and each of them stocks slightly different items. because they know what sells in each area.

elastoplast could very easily start making different shades of plasters, and it would not take long for shops to figure out how much of each shade they need to stock for it to work out for their local community.

all they would need to do is buy data from supermarket loyalty cards to start with.

recall · 28/06/2012 23:58

is it still called Australasia ??

OP posts:
saladcravings · 28/06/2012 23:58

Recall, where black or Asian people are a majority I meant

yellowraincoat · 28/06/2012 23:58

But that is not ok saladcravings You can't just shrug your shoulders at big business and say "oh well, they're just trying to make money" and then be surprised when the world is still racist.

saladcravings · 28/06/2012 23:59

Sorry, just talking about uk here! Obviously plasters in Asia should be (are?) a diff colour...

recall · 29/06/2012 00:00

just make them all clear

OP posts:
thisisyesterday · 29/06/2012 00:00

in 2001 there were over 3 million people of Asian origin living in the UK.

that is not a small amount.

87% of customers may only buy one shade, but when the other 13% is numbering in the millions it's hardly a niche market! and that's only in one country

thisisyesterday · 29/06/2012 00:00

recall, yes the continent is called Australasia

HolyCameraConfusionBatman · 29/06/2012 00:01

Ladywellian I think my skin tone is closer to the white than the weird pink/beige of Elastoplast tbh. White people are not actually white and black people are not actually black obviously, but I think it's fair to say the white 'blends in' to 'white skin' more than it would 'brown skin' so should they offer some with a black pad? It wouldn't match exactly, but it would be closer/less obvious than the white pad.

saladcravings · 29/06/2012 00:01

So they should make many shades as part of their corporate social responsibility, even if it looses them money?

recall · 29/06/2012 00:01

I really want to know now what colour they are in Asia now, does anyone know ?

OP posts:
thisisyesterday · 29/06/2012 00:01

sorry, my post wasn't clear. I only looked up british asians, not all other ethnic minorities, just to give a number to my point.

clearly the 13% is not only people of Asian origin

thisisyesterday · 29/06/2012 00:02

it won't lose them money
