Question about sky tv and phone line

Hi,

I want to switch to talktalk as it would save us at least £15 a month, but I have to have a bt phoneline for sky due to contract rules. Talktalk aren't cable, they use the same phoneline as bt, so does anyone know if I can make the switch?
I cna't find anything useful on either of their websites.

well, we have sky, BT line rental and tiscali calls I think that works the same as talk talk - tht, (our broad band is tiscali)

we had no problems with switching hasn't effected ourt sky at all.

with talk talk tho, I would't pay line rental to bt at all. That's why it is so cheap. I could get bband and line rental together for about half the cost.

can u didn't realise u did that? not sure then in that case. can't see it being an issue, will u be keeping the same number? prob worth giving sky a buzz.

We don't plug our Sky into a phone line anyway, even though we have BT. What does it get you in addition ?

JanH · 20/02/2006 12:53

All your Sky updates need a BT line, supposedly, Liz - new channels etc. If that's not true I'll disconnect ours forthwith!

LIZS · 20/02/2006 12:57

Er don't think it's true. We definitely didn't have it in Switzerland and don't now - all our updates come via the dish/cable. We only have basic Sky though, not Sky plus or anything fancy. The only reason I can think of for it is if you use the interactive functions for shopping etc.

munz · 20/02/2006 13:14

I think it's also the ablity to have box office and pay per view/ do the interactive things which need a phone line, without them u can't do it. (I know cos have blocked 090 no's from the phone and can't do the interactive games) also when we took the plug out couldn't do box offices. I didn't realise it had to be BT thou just thought any phone line would suffice.

not sure on the updates thingy, we do get them but out line's plugged in.

Kelly1978 · 20/02/2006 16:13

I've got skyplus. I think Lizs is right and it is only really necessary for the interactive functions. Though I don't see why they shouldn't work with another supplier. The only one we might use is box office, but if we could save the money on the phone bill we could just do online rentals instead, so I'm not bothered about that. My main worry is that it is a contractual requirement and they reckon they check up every so often and if we get caught out we have to pay for the equipment they supplied.

We had talktalk but had our line rental with BT. We didn't have the SKY plugged into the phone though (unless we wanted to put on a Box Office), but this worked for us for ages!! (We don't have it now cos we've got Freeview)
