Camcorder advice

Can nyone offer some advice (please!!). Dh and I are buying each other 'token' gifts for Christmas and are instead buying ourselves a camcorder. What I'd like to know is if there is a type of camcorder that you can use to download onto VHS tapes as well as your PC? We'd like to be able to edit things etc on the PC but also want our relatives (and us) to be able to watch VHS tapes - or DVD but am assuming that these are extortionate? All dh says is 'it needs to be digital'. Even that is beyond me. He also likes gadgets and zooms etc. (most of which I probablywon't understand.

Are there any other features we should look out for? Our budget isn't too tight but we'd still like to take price into consideration!
TIA

Most (if not all) camcorders will come with a lead that you plug into your TV that enables you to play the footage on the TV. If you have a video recorder on the same TV, you can record onto your VHS tape as the footage is showing.
If you want to edit, then download to VHS, you need to make sure that the camcorder has "DVin". You then go from camcorder to PC, edit your footage, back from PC to Camera, then from Camera to TV and then to VHS

(If there is an easier way to do this somebody please tell me)

The other thing to look for is a decent stills camera within the camcorder - v. useful if you don't already have a digital camera, although the quality is unlikely to be as good as a stand alone digital camera. But still good enough for e-mail etc

You all make it sound so simple!! What are the differences between 8mm, Hi-8, mini-DV etc? I did a google search and came up with all the different types and definitions but need them translated into English.

Stressyhead, thanks for taking so much time and effort to help me out (and your dh!)I live in Gloucestershire if your dh knows anywhere?
Also, i already have a digital camera so taking stills doesn't matter too much.
I don't thin you're a geek!
