Oh I have done something ^SO^ stupid...

And so out of character for me I am putting it down to pregnancy hormones.

A bloke with a big white van turned up on my doorstep, said he was selling a cream leather 3 piece suite. He said he wanted £280, and that it was brand new, just out of a show home.

So, I bought them, and currently have my big old comfy sofas outside on the front lawn.

I hate them.

They are hard, they are not ever such good quality, they are uncomfortable, and too small. I want my old sofas back. I've been in tears about it, but don't know what to do. We have nowhere to store them to sell them, so we can't bring the old ones back in, dp is extremely pissed at me, and we are stuck with them.

He quite likes them, and thinks I am being very silly.

so they are red hot are they?

edam · 15/02/2006 16:45

Deffo pregnancy hormones to blame, I think. Can you swap them for the old ones in your garden, and put some bin bags or something over them to protect them while sticking an ad in the local paper/newsagent's window?

ntt · 15/02/2006 16:45

omg my dad did this - got stung for £400 i seem to remember - they were hard, white plasticky things too. threw out a beautiful antique suite from my nans too which i wanted

Kelly1978 · 15/02/2006 16:47

is it real leather? If it is, it will soften. It took me forever to get used to my leather sofas after a big old comfty thing I had before, but they do get better.

messagedeleted · 15/02/2006 16:48

no i c ant belive it

girsl w e haev a " woman buys sofa off white van man"

DOnt you knwo this is a n all tiem mn classic?

Kelly1978 · 15/02/2006 16:50

I didn't think this was a common thing? I know my dp's grandad got stung like that tho. He was getting a bit senile by then and thought it was ok to have a lounge filled with sofas.

paolosgirl · 15/02/2006 16:50

What - he just turned up from nowhere, picked your house arbitarily, and flogged you a 3 piece suite???! Wow .

It must be your pregnancy hormones - I'd be taking a note of his licence plate and informing the local constabularly . Can you sit on them or are they too hot?

Seriously - could you put an ad in the paper for them, and bring the old ones back in? Either that, or hire a white van and go round the doors? . (Sorry!!! Couldn't resist!)

colditz · 15/02/2006 16:51

No I really don't think they are pinched, I just think they are a rip off. I don't think they are leather, they are rock hard, not as deep as they should be etc... they look ok, but you sit down and in 5 minutes you want to get up again. They make your bum itch and your hips ache. None of which you could tell from looking at them.

They just are a lot nastier on closer inspection than they looked in the back of the van.

Very very cross with myself, but we are skint and short of giving them away, there is nothing we can do.

You can smell if it is leather or not.

messagedeleted · 15/02/2006 16:52

i am offered these ( or was) regularly at one [oint
my dh think i make it up

hence long funny thread on mn awhile ago abotu it

paolosgirl · 15/02/2006 16:52

Oh bless you and your innocence, Colditz . Can you not sell them?

Blu · 15/02/2006 16:54

Can't you sell them to someone else? Even if not v nice £280 is not a lot for a 3 piece suite. get your old ones back in before they get wet and ruined!

KBear · 15/02/2006 16:55

Did you have £280 cash in your purse to give him or did you go to the bank and get him to come back? I've heard of this before but they'd be out of luck at my house because I've only ever got a fiver and a book of secondclass stamps in my purse!

meowmix · 15/02/2006 16:56

e-bay?

Hulababy · 15/02/2006 16:56

I would definitely bring your old ones back in if you prefer them. Before they get spoilt. Even if you have to have them lined in the hallway or something for now, or in a bedroom.

Then find someone who wants a white suite asap.

Blu · 15/02/2006 16:58

Someone in our office (who should have known a LOT better)bought a laptop from a white van man. Tried it out, saw all the gubbins and extras being put into the computer bag...gets it home - swish computer bag is magically filled with cardboard and a bottle of mineral water.

paolosgirl · 15/02/2006 17:01

That's true - if you wrote him a cheque, you could stop the cheque today. It's cheaper than paying the £280.

colditz · 15/02/2006 17:03

No, I have a cash point round the corner from me.

I really have nowhere to put them if i get the old ones back inside. But I have got to the point where I don't care and just want the horrid things out of my house.

The thing is, there are alright for the money... but i hate them.

Yes I feel very very stupid. And naive. I thought I was more worldly than that. Obviously am not safe to be left on my own for 5 minutes.

hercules · 15/02/2006 17:05

We've been offered white sofas from back of a van before!

helsi · 15/02/2006 17:07

try and sell them for £300 you will at least make a profit

KBear · 15/02/2006 17:08

Put an ad in your corner shop and local paper.

Don't beat yourself up anymore. What's done is done.

sunchowder · 15/02/2006 17:09

Sorry Colditz--please get your old couches back in before they get ruined. You must! If the new ones are not comfortable, it is not worth the 300 pounds to be uncomfortable and to have to look at them everyday.

colditz · 15/02/2006 18:53

I have sold them to my next door neighbour for £280!

I have my battered old sofas firmly wedged back where they should be. My neighbour is going to pay me £30 a week installments for the suite until it's paid.

I did make sure she sat on them, and had a good look before she bought them, as she popped round to borrow a dvd and caught me wailing. She definately wants them, mind you she is thin and will fit on them very nicely

Sorted. Even if she doesn't pay me, it is worth it to get my old ones back

I feel such a silly cow. Must be hormones.
