Just been reading current Mother & Baby magazine and it suggests that if you help out for 4 hours or more at an NCT sale then you are able to claim 80% of the takings that your products generated. Can anybody confirm that this is the case as thought that the most you could get was 70%. (Sounds silly but the difference will be significant to our Pre-School)

IME it is different depedning on where you are. I have loads of expereince of NCT sales as a buyer and a seller although I hsave never been a member. I have paid 25 or 30% commission. I have usually been happy to help out for as long as needed, but the minimum requirement is usually that you help for the duration of the sale which is rarely more than 2 hours.

Contact your local NCT brandch and ask about their commission rates.

Thanks Lonelymum, I have helped out at sales before but this will be the first time I am selling anything as have decided baby days are behind us and somebody else could use the piles of clothes I seem to have acquired. Any tips you can pass on?

Clothes don't sell too well. I mean, they do, people buy clothes, but there are usually mountains of clothes and yours might not even see the light of day.

What sells best is baby equipment and toys. I have hardly ever had to bring home with me any decent bits of equipment - have sold car seats, baby baths, stairgates, playpen, carriers, a double buggy, the lot. So my top tip would be to try to sell that sort of stuff and don't expect to make so much from the clothes.

Lonelymum, Thanks for the tips, we should be able to generate some cash with all the kit here and I could always kidnap the childrens toys - well all the ones they don't play with anyway!!

Which is your local NCT branch?

If you do want to have a go at selling clothes, use a rail and hang them in age order and/or sex. People are more likely to bother to look.

Every branch sets its own policy. Some branches have lots of volunteers and so don't require sellers to help at all. Some make it a condition of selling that you help out for part of the day. Commission rates vary from 60/40, 70/30 or 80/20.

Some branches, like mine, don't hold commission sales but instead have tabletop sales where you pay a table fee and sell your own stuff.
